Chapter Seven
Thou the spring of all my comfort,
More than life to me,
Abigail awoke as soon as the sun peeked in through the crack in the curtain. She stretched, trying not to hit Tessa. As her mind woke up, a fluttery feeling grew in her stomach. She was getting married today to someone she barely knew. And yet, somehow, she felt she had known him for a long time. His grief the night before had created a connection between them she had never expected.
Abigail climbed carefully out of bed and dressed hurriedly. Once her best dress was on, she looked in the mirror. The dress wasnât white, but it was slightly frilly and a pale pink color. The pink embroidered roses bordering the hem also accented her waistline. She walked to the window and looked out at the quiet streets. She guessed the time to be a little before six in the morning and apparently that was too early for people to be up and about the town. Though Lubbock was larger than some of the towns they had ridden through, she was still amazed at the difference in size between Richmond and Lubbock.
As she looked at the town, a movement up the road caught her eye and her mind wandered back to Timothy. God, help Timothy this morning. He has so much going on today. One year ago, his parents died. Today, he is getting married to a woman he doesnât really know. Give him peace and strength to get through today as he starts a new life. And, God, help me as I become a wife for the first time and an instant mother/mentor to Louise. She is very different from any girl I have ever known and I think she hides behind a façade of pretending to be a boy to mask her grief and hurt. She is too young to have lost her parents, Lord. Give Timothy and me wisdom as we guide her through her grief and pain. Help Louise to learn to lean on You for her comfort.
âAbby?â
Abigail smiled and finished her prayer. Thank You, Lord for Your grace, mercy, and wisdom. She turned away from the window. âYes, Tessa?â
âIs it time to get up?â
âIf you want to.â
âWhenâs the wedding?â Tessa asked as she climbed out from under the blankets.
âA few hours after breakfast.â
Tessa sighed. âBut they are coming here for breakfast, right?â
Abigail laughed. âYes, Darling, they are.â
âGood.â
An hour later, someone knocked on the door. Tessa ran to open it.
âHi, Louise.â
âHi. Timâs downstairs getting a table for us.â
Abigail smiled at her. âThank you, Louise. Would you like to come in while we finish getting ready?â
Louise stepped inside. âWhatâs to finish?â
Abigail pulled on her gloves and looked in the mirror. âProbably nothing, but I wanted to make sure I didnât have any stray hairs flying out every which direction.â
Louise made a scoffing noise. âEven after the stage ride your hair looked barely out of place.â
Abigail turned around and looked at her. âReally?â
Louise shrugged. âYep.â
Abigail walked over to Louise and pulled her into a hug.
