Chapter 6

“I don’t know what to make of you,” Sierra said, eying Dorian as he swallowed the last sip of his coffee. He had fame and fortune, yet seemed untouched by any of it. He didn’t brag or flash his success. If anything, he redirected any conversation that slid in the direction of his celebrity status to something else entirely.

“I can’t be that much of a mystery. I’ve been in the public eye for twelve years,” he said as he headed for the coffee maker.

“See, that right there is what I mean. The minute we start talking about you, you do that.”

“Do what?” he asked.

“Deflect. Or do some innocuous task as a distraction.” She aimed a pointed stare and smirked as he tipped the carafe and refilled her cup.

He glanced at her, back to the cup, and at her again once again, his face splitting into a grin. “Point taken. What do you want to know?”

She waited for him to sit down and nudged his ankle with her foot. “Why underwear modeling?”

He rocked his head back and forth as though to a beat of a song only he could hear. “Why not underwear?”

She shook her head and picked up her cup. “Vague. No answering a question with a question.”

He drummed his fingers and gazed out the window. “It was a total accident. I was in college. I found out my semester ran about two thousand over what was expected. My mom had just lost her job so the burden was on my dad alone. I didn’t want to bother them for the extra, and I needed it quick, so I answered an ad to do some modeling for a local clothing store.” He looked back at her and tilted his head. “The rest is history.”

He said it all with about as much enthusiasm as someone reading a value menu.

“Do you like what you do?” she asked.

He rubbed his jaw with his thumb and forefinger. “No one has ever asked me that before.”

“I’m one of a kind.”

“I’m getting that. The answer is not really, no. I like the money. I like the connections, but I don’t really enjoy what I do. I’d rather be on the finding talent side which is where I’m headed. I’m more than what people see in a magazine spread, but no one cares beyond seeing my flesh in a pair of underwear.”

“Sounds lonely,” she whispered.

“It is,” he said.

She set her cup down and laid her forearms on the table, leaning toward him. “So, what’s the real reason you went to Gerri? I get that it’s hard to trust women to not use you, but there’s something else. I don’t know how I know, it’s just this low hum of tension I’m getting from you. I have a feeling you’d be a whole lot less intense with the need to protect if there wasn’t the urgency.”

He reached for her and laid his palm over the back of her hand, giving her a tug, bringing her within inches of his face.
