I saw Mac sitting in the office. âWhatâs going on?â I asked, opening the door.
âI picked up the phone to call you several times today and set it back down every time.â
She looked nervous, which put me on alert. âSounds like great news. What didnât you want to tell me?â
âTwo sheriffâs cars pulled in a little while ago. The cops walked up front and came back with Jax in handcuffs.â
âAt least I know where to find him. Wait. Up front? Was he out on the beach?â
Mac looked down at her paperwork. âWhen your mother brought him here, I put him in unit ten. By the next morning, heâd moved his things into a waterfront unit.â
I tried not to yell. âYou shouldâve called me right away.â
âMy daughter Candy filled in for me and she didnât know there was a possible problem. She gave him the key after he told her he lost his. Iâm really sorry about this.â
Mac had once told me she and her husband gave their kids names with special meanings. They had joked about Coors, and a coin toss later, they named her Candy. I was happy for her daughter. Candy Lane was a stripper name, but not as bad as Coors Lane, which sounded like a street name.
âItâs not your fault or your daughterâs.â I knew if Jax hadnât been able to get a key, he wouldâve broken in, and then changed the locks. âWho else is staying there with him?â
âTwo people, Robert and Apple.â Mac sighed.
âWhere are they now?â
âAppleâs still in the cottage. She sleeps all day and comes out late in the afternoons. I saw Robert walking down the street when the cops pulled in. He stopped at the yellow house across the street and sat on the patio, feet up like he lived there, until after they left. Then he walked up the drive just before you got here.â
âIâd like to kick those two over the state line while Jax is in jail.â I simmered with pent-up anger.
âThey know a free ride when they see one,â Mac said. âAsking wonât get rid of them. Death threats would work with Apple. Iâm not sure about Robert.â
âThis is ridiculous.â I stood up. âThis is not a redo of the past.â
âSit down.â Mac motioned to my chair. âThereâs more. The sheriff was summoned for noise complaints and a fight. They threw a huge party; add liquor and drugs and you get irate neighbors blowing up the phones to the sheriff.â
âIâm going to go have a talk with them.â I held out my hand. âGive me a key in case they donât open the door.â
I walked outside and called Fab. I got her answering machine, so I left a message. âCan you find out why Jax was arrested and how long heâll be in jail and get back to me?â
I turned the doorknob of the cottage, and to my surprise, it opened. Robert and Apple sat on the couch, watching television.
âHello, you two,â I said. âJust like old times.
