Chapter 17
"Kronoscope?" Kane growled, resenting the fact he had given Lakesh the satisfaction of seeing him startled into silence, even for a few seconds. "A Nazi version of Operation Chronos?”
Lakesh nodded. "In essence, yes, apparently using the so-called Black Sun as the propagation medium. I postulate it is a singularity. Or was."
Kane felt his lungs seize for a painful instant. "I know what that is, at least."
Lakesh eyed hits critically. "Do you, indeed? Can you explain it to me?"
Trying to tamp down his rising temper. Kane said, "You, know damn good and well I'm talking about that thing Lord Strongbow put together. I saw it in operation, even traveled through it. You didn't."
Lakesh lifted one shoulder in a shrug. "I concede your point However, Strongbow created an artificial black hole by combining the working principles of the quantum interphase inducers I developed for Project Cerberus with the temporal dilator capacitors of Operation Chronos."
Kane didn't need to be reminded. Despite the passage of nearly five years, he could easily recall the huge orb of absolute, impenetrable blackness floating in the center of a complexity of electronic consoles, relays and snaking power cables. It was like a bubble of burnished obsidian, but its surface reflected no light whatsoever. Although he was loath to admit it, he also remembered Brigid Baptiste's explanation of its existence, later expanded upon by Lakesh. Hyper-dimensional physics depended on the directed acceleration and deceleration of subatomic particles. Powered by a small thermonuclear generator, the singularity was the black maw of eternity, potentially the hub of a wheel to every time, place and person.
Kane knew the madman who called himself Strongbow envisioned the singularity as a method to wring order from chaos by channeling the energies of the quantum stream into the artificial black hole. Once that was accomplished, Strongbow believed he could impose true order on all humanity simply by willing it, as a stone thrown into a pond sends ripples to the farthest shores. "So you think the Nazis managed to build a singularity long before Strongbow did?" he asked.
"Not exactly," Lakesh answered. "It appears that what lay within the cavern you visited most naturally occurring vortex point, perhaps the most powerful one on this or any other planet."
Kane crooked an eyebrow. "I'll go along with the fact it was a vortex point, but as far as we could see it was just a hole in the ground."
"Yes, now. But I've reached the provisional hypothesis that its energies were completely drained over two hundred years ago."
Kane frowned. "Is that even possible?"
"Who knows? After all, working out the relationship between our interphaser and the parallax points is an ongoing process."
Several years before, Lakesh had constructed a small device designed to interact with naturally occurring hyper-dimensional vortices, which were indexed by the Parallax Points Program. The program actually made a map, a geodetic index, of all the vortex points on the planet. The interphaser Lakesh designed interacted with the energy within a naturally occurring vortex and caused a temporary overlapping of two dimensions.
