CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
Claire
“Rapid Fire, go.” Brandon broke the silence with his deep voice. The sky was filled with puffy white clouds, creating any shape imaginable. It was a rare day that we both had off from work, and we were taking advantage of it. We tossed together a picnic lunch and headed to the park, setting up a blanket in the open field. The weather finally started to stay consistently warm, providing the much needed sunshine for today.
I coughed up a laugh. “More like ‘super slow turtle fire’ if you ask me. You’re like the worst at answering quickly.” I leaned back. The past two weeks had been fabulous. The two of us had spent almost all our time together, and we still had so much to talk about. Our conversations never ended, our laughter never waning. I felt like I could tell him everything, and I did, never once feeling judged for my thoughts. It was refreshing.
Brandon sat up, leaning on his elbow to face me. His plain gray t-shirt was the right amount of tight and loose, highlighting his incredible pecs, but not being overwhelmingly snug. He pointed his finger at my face, and I held back a smirk. I knew exactly where this is headed, because I’d done it a million times with Ali and Jackson. “First of all,” Yup, here it comes. I broke into a smile, which threw him off for a moment. “You ask super hard questions! Your questions are thoughtful, but I also need a moment to think about it!” I nodded in agreement. It’s true, I ask hard questions, but for good reason.
“Second, we’re playing my way tonight.”
“Your way?” I asked, raising an eyebrow in question.
“Yup. Easy questions only. The ones that someone could actually answer rapidly.”
“Such as?”
“The basics. Favorite color, favorite movie, favorite book, all of that. The ones that everyone else usually uses. The ones that are used to actually get to know someone right off the bat.” Brandon nodded, a smile on his lips, pleased with himself.
I cocked my head. “Are they though?” I pushed, trying to get him to understand my point of view.
“Are they what?”
“Are they the best way to get to really know someone?”
Brandon grinned. “Sure are. Try me.” Ok, game on.
“Favorite color?”
“Blue.” I gave him a look. Really? Blue? I couldn’t ask any follow up questions, but seriously? I rolled my eyes and continued.
“Favorite movie?”
“Iron Man.” I waited expectantly. “The first one,” he clarified, understanding my hesitation.
“Favorite book?”
“Holes.” Again, I waited. “By Louis Sachar? Made into a movie with Shia LeBeouf? About the kids from juvie sent to dig holes out in the desert? Come on, you have to know-“ I broke into a smile, confirming I know the book rather well. Brandon rolled his eyes this time. “Two questions left,” he stated, laying down and putting his hands behind his head like a pillow. His shirt lifted away from his jeans, exposing a sliver of his washboard abs. I suddenly was desperate to run my hands over them, to lay my head on his stomach and snuggle in.
