The crowd at the World Series ODI match between Australia and England at Sydney in 1987 had to wait until the last over for the contest to take off, but it was worth hanging about for. The home team should have won and looked set to do so, after Dirk Wellham had scored 97 in their total of 234 runs and the visitors had been reduced to 186 for 5. David Gower and Ian Botham had played enterprising knocks, but when they fell, the onus lay on Allan Lamb in his pastel blue pyjamas, who seemed to be struggling with his timing. Indeed, with an over remaining and 18 runs still needed to win, he was yet to hit a boundary. A wild throw from Wellham on the cover boundary allowed two off the first ball from the tall, thin left-armer Bruce Reid, which was soon followed by a four through square leg. ‘That makes it interesting,’ said Bill Lawry on Channel Nine commentary. A towering six over midwicket next ball certainly did, bringing the runs needed down to six off three. England were favourites for the first time in the match. Lamb could only knock the fourth delivery out to Wellham at extra cover in the circle for a single, but the throw was needlessly strong, Reid fumbled and the batsmen ran through for an overthrow. Lamb was back on strike and took advantage to stroke the fifth ball past square leg for a win with a ball to spare. Australia had bossed 99 overs of the match, but left the stadium as the losing side.
