Arriving in Naples, we head up to the street. Already saving our destination, the duomo, into my Google Maps app we are ready to rock and roll. Gary mentions he wants to use the free podcast I loaded on our phones to do the “Naples City Walk” by Rick Steves. The podcast walking tour begins at the Archaeological Museum, so we head there instead.

“These streets are old,” I mention to Gary as we walk.

“A lot of history here, for sure,” he replies.

We find our starting point and stop for a moment to take in the bustling streets. We didn’t get to visit Naples the last time we visited Sorrento, back in 2012, as the schedule was jammed packed. Today, we are going to take the time to enjoy this city and its pizza, I think.

We put on our headphones and hit “play.” I must turn up my volume, as the noise from the traffic interferes with Rick’s travelogue. I get to a point in the recording where they tell us to walk to the corner, and I look at Gary to see if he reached the same point. Not yet. I press “pause” and wait for him to catch up. When I interpret the look saying he is ready to move on, we begin walking. Without the printed PDF route map in front of me, I am lost after a few minutes. Not all streets are marked in Italy, and I didn’t quite hear where Rick’s friend on the podcast said to turn. I see Gary pointing to a street, and I follow.

We give up after about twenty minutes as we, obviously, passed the one street we needed to take. We used one of Rick Steves’ walking podcasts in Florence and loved it. Naples is just too noisy, so we decide to ditch the tour and navigate the streets ourselves.

Naples is not like any city I ever experienced in Italy. It reminds me of Manhattan, New York, with the hustle-bustle and boisterous streets. But I think it ends there. The tall industrial-looking apartment buildings exhibit laundry hanging from balconies. The small side streets, however, display laundry hanging over them like strings of lights. I stop and observe. I take out my phone and snap several photos. Such an idyllic moment.
