MADDY

With Jared and Sam exploring outside, I’m trying on dresses and taking one of the few opportunities I get to have some serious girl talk with Lucy.

As I wriggle into a blue dress with a zipper at the back, she sips her coffee.

“Sam wants to camp out here tonight. She doesn’t want to go home,” she says.

I chuckle. “Camping out here can be fun,” I say.

Lucy, ever the city girl pulls a face. “Jared says she’s like you at that age. Should I be worried?”

I laugh and turn around so she can zip me up. “Only if you don’t want her to grow up to be awesome,” I say.

Lucy groans as she zips me up. “I’ll take that as a yes, I should be worried.”

I smooth the dress down at the sides, and since I don’t have a full-length mirror, make a ‘how do I look’ gesture.

Lucy appraises me, and squints. “Not sure. Try the pale green one. I think it might suit your complexion more.”

I’m not exactly into fashion, or really care, so I defer to her judgment, and climb out of the dress.

As she passes me the green dress, my thoughts return to the man I wish they wouldn’t.

“You remember how Jared was at his worst? The nightmares, how his hands shook, and he used to jump at loud noises?”

I can hear the pain in her voice as she replies. “Of course, I do. Why?”

I turn and face her, feeling like shit for making her think about it again. “I’m sorry to bring it up, it’s just I met someone, and he has a lot of the same issues as Jared did,” I say.

Her interest seems to overtake her pain at discussing it. “He’s a Vet?”

I nod. “He was stranded here, so I fixed his car, and we had, um, you know, a thing,” I say.

She gives me a wry smile. “I know. Jared told me. Although he referred to him as a transient,” she says.

I scowl at the window. “Hardly, he wasn’t short on cash, and he was on his way to Phoenix from...”

When I draw a blank, I realize I never ever stopped to ask him where he was from.

But Lucy has moved on, and when her eyes shift to my neck, I belatedly realize now I’m not wearing my coveralls the bruising is visible.

“What happened to your neck? Those aren’t hickeys you’ve been hiding.”

I shrug my shoulders up and try in vain to hide. “Um, nothing,” I say.

She gives me her best mom look and shakes her head. “Come on. Spill. We’ve got time before Jared and Sam get back.”

I release a sigh as I drop my shoulders. “Not much time. And I’d rather not get caught talking about this,” I say.

When she gives me an encouraging look, I carry on. “I had an incredible weekend with Miller, then he left, but I think I can help him, you know, the way you helped Jared see the silver lining,” I say.

Lucy’s eyes widen, and her mouth slackens before her voice drops to a whisper.
