“No, it was expected. I don’t know how you’re going to pay us, seeing as how I don’t take cash anymore.”

“We pay in credits now,” Colonel Hoisen said.

“Credits? From who, and who will take them? No… your credits are even more useless than cash right now. With cash you can at least start a fire or… or—”

“Don’t finish that sentence, Lieutenant. Fecal humor is not to my tastes,” the colonel said half-jokingly but with an edge of seriousness to his tone.

“Very well, Colonel, so what is the plan? Are you going to bring in a bunch of civilians who have been surviving on the streets for the last few weeks and try to train them?” Ian was serious since he was designated to be in charge of civilian interface.

“Not quite. Besides… that will not be your issue for a while yet.”

“I’m afraid I don’t understand.”

“Then let me explain. The intel you brought us from Chimney Rock is highly sensitive information that could be the source of some very dramatic changes in the course of our world today. The problem is getting it to the people who can do something with it.”

“Let me guess, USAMRIID at Fort Detrick in Mary‐ land?” Ian said.

“You guessed it.”

“Excuse me, Colonel, but can’t we just email it to them?”

“Technology isn’t what it was a couple of months ago, Ian. We are unable to break through the encryption in order to even copy it. We’ve discussed our options and have decided that sending a crew to carry it is our best option, and that means you.”

“Me? We are not trained for that kind of thing, Colonel,” Ian protested.

“Son, nobody is trained to traverse a country full of infected humans who want to eat them, with the exception of you… and your crew. You have already done it, and while the outbreak was at its worst. You’re like the snot that blows out the side of the Kleenex or the minnow that always seems to slip between your fingers. You guys are like greased pigs and always seem to squirt out of every situation still on your feet.”

“Come on now, Colonel, you can just fly someone out there and drop it off. It will be there in twenty-four hours.”

“I wish it were that simple. Now we have a secure air strip just south of Zanesville, Ohio, and that’s as far east as we have one. I know that is several hundred miles away from our objective, but it is the closest we have that can accommodate a C130, and it is a dirt track.”

“I thought we were in contact with O’Hare or some such shit?”

“We are in contact with fifteen desk jockeys hiding behind blinds so as not to excite the infected that cover every square inch of the airport. You said you wanted to get to DC; this is the closest I can get you to it, and all you have to do is drop off some mail for me.”

“I would really appreciate it if you found someone better equipped, Colonel.
