Chapter 10

Margot had been in the interrogation room long enough she’d fallen asleep with her head on the table. After getting stitched up by a paramedic on the scene, they took her to the station despite the protests from the paramedic that she needed to get checked out by a doctor, preferably at the hospital. It seemed a reasonable request since they were already at the hospital, but both the local cops and federal marshals refused. The medic did manage to get her some pain medication, but after that, she was off to the station. It was probably just as well since the Sheriff’s department showed up wanting to take her to their jail and question her about shooting Mr. Proctor.

Once they got there, Margot took turns telling different marshals and detectives she had nothing to say except she wanted to talk to her lawyer. To avoid that, they didn’t arrest her but still left her handcuffed to an iron ring welded to an iron table in the interrogation room all night.

Margot woke up when the door opened. She saw Radcliff come in and take the seat across from her.

“How’s the shoulder?”

“Hurts, but I’ll survive. Give me some good news.”

“I’ve got the key to the handcuffs.”

“So, can I go home?”

“Not yet, but you can take off the bracelet for a while.”

“Just for a while?”

Radcliff shrugged. “A shootout at the hospital tends to get people upset especially when a federal marshal is involved.”

“You said involved.”

“Yeah.”

“Which means he’s not dead?”

“You sound surprised.”

“Because I am.”

“He was wearing Kevlar under his suit, and more importantly, he’s apparently harder than a coffin nail.”

“I knew that when he stumbled in and saved my life. I just figured once he went down the second time he wasn’t getting back up.”

“Looks like there’s a chance you were mistaken.”

“Good to hear. I never even heard what happened to Mandy.”

“Good news on that front as well. While you and Mrs. Proctor were going at each other, the surgeon was sealing up her wound. It looks like she’s going to make it.”

“Well, that’s even better. The last thing I need is to have her death and McMasters’ on my conscious. Just her getting hurt was bad enough.”

“I already told you, Mandy wasn’t your fault. You did what you could. I don’t even know what you’re talking about with McMasters.”

“I should have never gone to the hospital. I didn’t think it through, even though it should have been obvious.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You said it before I got out of the car, but I never made the connection.”

“Still don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Going to the hospital was an obvious move. McMasters knew I would be there and if he could figure it out, so could have Melanie or Mrs. Proctor. I should have known that and stayed away.”

“Maybe, but…”

“Maybe nothing. Not thinking things like that through could have gotten me killed.”

“But it didn’t.”

“Only because Mrs. Proctor ran into McMasters in the hallway; otherwise, I would have been sitting there watching television when she came in with her machine gun.
