A receiving line of sorts greeted their arrival at Abby and Jonah’s home. Ginger, their golden retriever, and Eva Grace were nowhere in sight.

“I can’t believe you banished the munchkin,” Rachel said in a teasing tone.

“Jonah’s parents have big plans for her this weekend. They spirited her away this morning. I miss her already.” Abby glanced up at Jonah. “Having her gone is hard on both of us.”

“True statement.” Jonah took the bottle from Abby. “Maple bacon moonshine?”

She smiled. “It’s from a distillery in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. It’s great in almost anything, or you can drink it straight.”

Jonah glanced at Abby. “Almost makes me wish we’d had a stock-the-bar wedding shower.”

“We had our chance.” Abby poked him in the ribs. “All these gifts go to Nell and Leo.”

“What gifts?” Nell, who’d been speaking with Leo’s parents, strolled over to greet Rachel and Dixon.

“Moonshine,” Rachel pointed. “From me.”

“Stainless-steel pint glasses from me.” Dixon lifted a gift sack from a local store that specialized in lagers and ales.

“Thank you both.” Leo, who’d strolled up, stared curiously at the moonshine, then at his fiancée. “We’re definitely going to have to try some of this. Maybe later tonight.”

“It’s great in hot chocolate,” Rachel said, her comment drawing their attention back to her.

“You look different.” Nell’s gaze narrowed. Her head cocked. “You changed your hair.”

Dixon stepped forward. “I like it.”

Rachel nearly groaned. The way he said it and the look in his eyes dared anyone to disagree.

“Platinum is very trendy right now.” Nell smiled. “I agree with Dixon. And I love the cut.”

“I’m having it changed back on Monday,” Rachel informed her. “The color, I mean.”

“A woman’s prerogative.” Nell lifted a shoulder in a shrug. “I’ve been known to change my hair color several times in one day, thanks to wigs.”

The last of the tension slipped from Rachel’s shoulders as she and Dixon made their way around the room. How could she have forgotten? The party tonight was filled with friends. They were kind.

The only wild card was Jackie Rollins. Jonah’s sister was a newcomer to Hazel Green. While the schoolteacher was always nice, it was clear—at least to Rachel—that she had her eye on Dixon.

But the smile she directed to Rachel this evening was warm and friendly. If she gave Dixon an extra-long hug, well, that was Jackie.

“I hear you brought moonshine.”

Rachel nodded, and she felt Dixon’s hand slip around her back to rest on her waist. “Maple bacon. One of my brothers brought some back from a trip to Gatlinburg. I’m not a big drinker, but I have some butter pecan that’s especially good in hot cocoa on cold winter nights.” Rachel clamped her mouth shut, realizing she’d been rambling.

“I love moonshine. I never thought to put it in cocoa, but I can see where that would be an excellent combination.” With her blonde curly hair pulled back in a high tail, Jackie looked so much like her niece, Eva Grace, that Rachel couldn’t help but smile.

“I’d love to come over and check out the butter pecan.
