Chapter Twelve

Arden had been to several musicology conferences in the past. This one was no different. It was a mixed bag of interesting and so-so speakers. During the lunch break, she’d seen one of the musicians who’d been part of the orchestra exchange program in London last summer. The inevitable question about her marriage had come up. As she’d given out the generic version she saved for such occasions, she’d remembered Russell’s comments. He’d called her decision to attend Lewis and Chantal’s wedding ceremony brave and unselfish. That meant something coming from a man who’d walked away from the sport he loved in order to take care of his wife.

Her last session of the day finished up early. If she hurried, she might make it to the Boston Public Library before it closed. As she exited the hotel, she got a call from Jewell.

“You answered! I was expecting to leave a message. Be honest. How many times did you fall asleep listening to those pompous windbags drone on and on?”

Arden laughed. “Zero, but I’ll admit that I did drink lots of coffee. You’ll never guess who I ran into this morning.”

“You sound excited. Was it your mom?”

The ‘you sound excited’ comment was worrisome. The last thing Arden needed was for Jewell to get wind of her attraction to Russell. “No. It was your big brother. Russell’s in town for a friend’s wedding. We’re staying at the same hotel.”

“Really? When I talked to my mom the other day, she mentioned that Russell was going out of town. I must have missed the part about Boston. He’d be a great person to show you around. He used to live there.”

Arden was relieved to be closing in on her destination. The less she talked about Russell to someone who knew her so well, the better. “I’ll have to let you go. I’m getting ready to walk into the library.”

“Out of all the places you could go in Boston, you chose to visit a library.”

“This isn’t just any library. It’s a historical landmark.”

“Books and history! The dynamic duo of boredom. I would tell you to stay out of trouble, but what trouble could you get into at a library?”

“You evidently haven’t watched many horror movies. Talk to you later.”

Arden turned down the volume on her phone before stepping through the ornate bronze door of the McKim Building. The marble floors, soaring vaulted ceilings, and wall murals were the perfect blending of art and architecture. She ascended the grand staircase to the second floor and walked through Bates Hall, the famous reading room with its aisles of rectangular oak tables and green shaded lamps. From there she checked out the murals in the Abbey Room depicting Sir Galahad’s quest for the Holy Grail. Much to her disappointment, the other rooms on the second floor were closed to the public.

She returned to the first floor and started down a hallway she hoped would take her to the courtyard. Muffled music and conversation could be heard coming from behind several closed doors.
