CHAPTER 15

Samantha Finds a Spark

While Eric drove them to the café, Samantha let her mind wander. She felt well rested and ready to hit the books again today. Her road after law school did not tie itself up into a neat little bow. Sometimes she wasn’t sure whether or not she was a little jealous of Eric. She actually had left the University law school in order to protect their relationship. It took some of the competition out of their partnership and gave her some room to grow in her own legal world.

They were in the same class and found it overly distracting. People started deferring to Eric for her responses. The final straw for Samantha was when a rather old and stodgy contracts professor asked her why she even bothered studying. He implied that she would be fine because Eric was a smart young man and all she had to do was keep him happy, keep pretty, and marry the man.

That afternoon she applied to transfer to another law school. Her transfer was in the middle of the school year but she had not done all this work to get placed behind due to rumors that she was only attending for an “MRS” degree. After looking into other programs in the area, not just based on the name and perceived ranking of the schools, she had decided to transfer to Loyola’s law school.

When it was done she found herself lying to Eric about her grades. She had done better than he but did not want to have that come between them. Since she transferred, her grades did not go into the class ranking. Samantha felt that she had chosen love because it had to be helped and nurtured. Now she was wondering if the whole thing was stupid and she had put herself second. He let her do it. There was no protest from him. He never offered to change schools.

Her standing at both schools had been strong. She excelled in her classes and was quite active on the moot court team. Samantha found that her new school was much more relaxed and students actually shared information and knowledge. Her legal family at Loyola was great and supportive of everything. Some other things she found out about herself, she chose to ignore. Her focus had to be on law and on her growing relationship with Eric. Anything else was just a distraction from the path that her family decided she should be following.

Samantha had thought about her wedding ever since she was eight years old. It was her desire to be married to a smart, handsome man. At that time he was a prince and rode a white horse, but Eric was close to the image in many ways. No one ever talked about having other ideas or feelings that might go against her dream. She dated all the cute boys through school and excelled in both sports and academics. Her parents supported her through college and law school. They always joked that because she argued so well, she would make a great lawyer.
