Chapter 15

The roads leading from San Francisco were clogged with cars. No matter how well-planned an evacuation, all it takes is human error and one mishap to stall everything.

Citizens refused to use water transportation to escape into Oakland and beyond, fearful more of the creatures would appear and drag them to the bottom.

General Redbourne really couldn’t blame them. He thought he’d never step foot in the ocean again. If something this massive was hidden somewhere in the world, and it shed vicious killers from its body, what else was out there?

Red wasn’t stupid enough to voice these concerns to his superiors. He had a job to do and he’d been picked because they knew he wouldn’t question anything. He would do what needed to be done.

Within the scope of what looked the best for everyone involved.

Still reeling from the private backlash he’d received from his superiors over the course change, which they opined was because of the two men who’d somehow gotten past their security and unleashed creatures with a growing body count, Red knew he needed to proceed with absolute caution.

He needed to rely on the hundreds of specialists in the building instead of worrying about too much information being shared.

Phones had been confiscated, no one was allowed in or out, and all computer terminals closed off. Three desktop computers were still working but they were being monitored so no one could send pictures, messages or anything else.

Red hated doing this to so many people who were trying to help, but he knew it was beyond his control. They were still trying to spin damage control.

He knew if he apologized to the scientists he’d be called on the carpet for not doing his job, which was to show no emotion and get a solution to this problem, as if they had any precedent.

Red decided he needed a break. The stacks of papers looked like they were growing right before his eyes. He left his office and took a quick walk down the hall, stretching his legs.

He wasn’t as young as he used to be. He’d seen combat in his past. Led charges in Afghanistan and Kuwait as well as a few places the average citizen couldn’t pronounce and had no idea their military was even there.

Such was the life of a military man. He’d been married to his country for so long and he knew he’d die still in service if they’d let him.

“General,” Petra said hesitantly, nearly colliding with Red as they both rounded a corner, deep in their own thoughts. “I was coming to see you.”

“About?”

Petra shrugged. She looked tired. Red knew she’d been up most of the night, putting together reports and printing the important ones for his perusal. “I think we need to go back to Russia.”

Red sighed. “That’s no longer an option. The Russians said they allowed a look and that was enough. They feel another study would only lead to the wrong conclusions.”

“They’re afraid we’ll point a finger at them or find something our quick visit missed.
