Welcome to NRV-0757!
The lobby was quiet. People were sitting around talking in hushed tones, but the frantic feeling of the previous days was gone. More than that, without Clifford it felt like most of the drama had left too. Players were giving me nods and smiles, but I was not sure if that was because of our accomplishments yesterday or if they were just friendly.
The calm helped, especially after the memory fragment that invaded my dreams. It was strange, like the dreams I’ve had since Goldy stole my memories. I was only now beginning to realize that these fragments weren’t dreams but real events that occurred within the inner circle of Odditek’s management team. The Judge was behind it, but I had no way to confirm that. Next time we talked, I was going to get answers, but that was a problem for later.
“Quiet isn’t it?” Curtis asked appearing near me.
“Reading my mind eh?”
“Not really, all first timers notice it when they get to this point. Going forward its a game of endurance, most people fail because they lack the drive. But, we might have been a little overzealous with some of the gameplay.” Curtis chuckled. “Truthfully, the bus at the very beginning took out way more players than expected. The CEO driving was a bit on the crazy side. After that, it—people still surprise me I guess.”
“Is that a polite way of saying they don’t evolve?”
“Maybe? I just hoped that after a century and a half people would give up their selfishness. Become better people. They haven’t. We are still looking out for ourselves, and the world be damned.” Curtis drew in a deep breath and let it out. “But that is too heavy a topic this early in the morning. Let's get your skill choice taken care of, what have you got?”
We talked back and forth for about ten minutes before I came up with something that Jake accepted. A smile pushed my cheeks upward as I read the description, and I couldn’t wait for my pact to see it in action.
“Well, I admit that is new.” Curtis had a dopey grin on his face. “The CEOs are going to shit when they see this in action. An Office Prank as a skill will open up all kinds of craziness next year.”
While I still had my menu open I also selected Hire Subordinate for my class skill. Not willing to give up the surprise, I did not look up my secondary skill. Office Prank covered a series of skills, but they were going to work like traps, so it was labeled generically.
