FIFTEEN

Los Angeles, California 2070

I wake up early. Today’s the day I leave with the retrieval team and start the hunt for my mom.

If I had my way, we’d start in Oklahoma first, but that will be our last stop. There are five Los Angeles-based transporters to find, including my mom. Our route starts in New York, then down to Virginia, Wyoming, Texas, and finally Oklahoma. We’re also doing a courtesy search for the Chicago division after we finish in Oklahoma. There is a missing transporter who landed over two hundred miles from my mom’s drop zone but came in off course. They can’t locate her in Arkansas and think there’s a chance she may have traveled out of her drop area. Frank agreed to do a cursory search of the outlying areas of Piedmont while we are there.

Too keyed up to sleep, I review my plans for the morning. I need to take Max to my Aunt Kat’s, so I won’t have to board him. I also have to ready the house to be vacant for at least two weeks. Frank says Linda will check on the place while I’m gone, but I don’t want her to walk into some mess because I forgot to turn off the water or something stupid. I never understood how much effort it takes to run a house. My mom’s always taken care of all that. But I learned quickly after she went missing; nothing like getting tossed into the deep end. After all that, I’m meeting the other team members in the cafeteria for breakfast. We might only get MRE’s and food replacement capsules for a while after this, so we’re going to eat a decent meal before we leave.

I take a quick shower and get dressed, then chase Max down and pack up all his stuff.

How one dog can require so much is beyond me—a bed, toys, food, treats, and a blanket. He knows something’s up and tries to run. Maddie has already left for work, so I’m on my own trying to bait him.

I don’t need this today, Max.

I catch him by enticing him with a jerky treat and load him in the car. After dropping him off I head to work, even though I’m super early. I use the time to recheck my equipment because Frank will have my ass if I forget anything. I meet the team as planned and make small talk. No one brings up our mission. There are four other individuals on the team with me, and Frank is our unit leader. Carey is twenty-six and not married. Penn is twenty-eight and married with a new baby boy. Gray is forty-five, married and has two teenage girls, and Adams is thirty-eight and divorced with an eleven-year-old son. Carey and I have the most in common and have become friends over the past few days of training. I told him my mom is out there, and how much this means to me.
