It did not take long, because Mr Blackthorn listened well, and because I only told him what Mr Knight knew. I wanted to see how that went first, how Mr Blackthorn would react, before I told him anything more.

‘So your mother posed for some racy pictures,’ he said, thoughtfully. He didn’t leap to denounce me or her as a handmaiden of Satan, which was hopeful. ‘I wonder what she wanted the money for. Was your father tight with her allowances?’

‘No,’ I said. ‘He was very generous with her.’ It was only after she had gone that he had got more careful, perhaps because I was his daughter, and had not managed a household on my own before. Or perhaps he regretted his generosity, if it had meant my mother could leave.

‘I doubt she was an actress,’ he said. ‘It seems too far a stretch in her home town, to me. I can do a bit of rooting around, see if I can find out more about this Evelina Joyce. There might be a clue there, though I don’t think they are the same person.’

I smiled at him, mildly, although my insides were jumping up and down. Because it looked as if he was going to do a bit of investigating for me. If I handled it right, if I didn’t make it too formal. If I just gave him titbits, and intrigued him, maybe he would get involved and then solve it for me, with discretion and valour, like a proper detective.
