Chapter 12
Stop the music!
Not Papyrus. Please, not Papyrus! Of all the font styles Julia was scrolling through on her laptop, that one was the most over-obvious and dated. First off, August was hideously early for them to be meeting to hash out details on the printed program for a January wedding. April rolled her eyes slightly, where the other two couldnât see, then had to check herself briefly, giving credit where it was due. Planning far ahead was almost always smarter than cutting things too close. And, since the expense of a printed order of service was maid-of-honor Juliaâs gift to the bride, it was only natural that Julia would take the lead on the details of it. She was a professional graphic designer, after all. Juliaâs got all the ranking, the confidence, and the know-how, and Grace has all the drop-dead beauty, the diamond ring, and the dreams coming true. Where does that leave me?
April quickly put in a plug for her top three lettering styles while Grace lingered over Papyrus, actually running her index finger over the texture, as it were, of the uppercase letter E in the sample words shown. And youâre not supposed to touch a laptopâs screen with your fingers, either, April judged waspishly. Her dark mood was getting into the danger zone, and she knew it. Knew it and felt powerless to stop it.
âWe donât have to decide today. Now that Iâve seen your preferences, Iâll work up a couple of program samples to show you.â
âSounds good. And I do like a two-sided card instead of a floppy, folded page.â
The folded program had been an early suggestion by April, and sheâd been outvoted on that layout as well as on the color of paper. Very light gray would have blended nicely with the red shade of the bridesmaidsâ dresses and with the bouquets, but Grace favored Juliaâs idea of bright white with dark gray text instead. In fact, the two of them were so chummy over this that there was almost no point in her being here at all! That night after the engagement party, it had sounded as though Grace was inviting her two bridesmaids to work together on the program.
Julia began to shut her machine down. âThank you for finding us this little alcove so we wouldnât be competing with the bandâs rehearsal noise.â That was the first remark of Juliaâs that might have sounded in any way negative about the arrangements. Otherwise, she seemed duly impressed with The Dwelling overall on her first visit, using a guest pass.
âI like background noise,â April countered recklessly, adding at the sight of the othersâ glances toward her, âI guess Iâm still so used to the uproar of campus life, where I had to concentrate in spite of party noise and whatever.â So far, Julia and Grace had been either unaware of, or tactfully overlooking, her ill mood. It hadnât helped matters that she would have preferred they meet about the wedding program in the bandâs rehearsal room where Sam, Alec and the others could see the clever job they were doing.
