Chapter 36
Zoe
Physically, Zoe felt a thousand times better when she woke up on Wednesday morning. Yes, her grandmother was still crazy, and yes, she still had to go hang out at church with another crazy old lady, but her head didnât hurt anymore, her stomach felt great, and her thoughts were clear.
âDo you want a ride?â Gramma asked when she headed toward the door.
âNo thanks. I like walking.â
âAll right. Please come straight home after school. Rachel is expecting you at three-thirty.â
Zoe suppressed a groan. Had she really needed to bring that up? Didnât she know that mentioning it would upset Zoe right before she started her day, which was sure to be upsetting enough?
âYes, I know.â She stopped. Did she know? What was the plan, exactly?
âWeâre meeting at the church?â
âYes.â
âAnd which oneâs Rachel again?â She thought she knew the answer to this, but she hoped she was mistaken.
Gramma didnât answer at first, so Zoe looked at her. She appeared to be stymied by the question. âSheâs the tall one.â
Not mistaken. âThe one who wears the crazy hats?â
Gramma nodded.
Zoeâs hand fell off the doorknob. âGramma, please. I donât need a babysitter. That lady is super weird. I donât want to hang around with her. Canât you just give me a list and Iâll work on my own?â
Something flickered across Grammaâs face, and then she chewed on her bottom lip. She looked like she was trying to keep a secret. But what secret?
âI think youâll like her.â
âLike her? Gramma, come on.â She waited for her to see reason.
Nothing happened.
âI mean no disrespect, but anyone who wears hats like hers has to have a screw loose. I really donât want to be alone with her.â
The smile fell off Grammaâs face. âThatâs the deal, Zoe. Take it or leave it.â
Her good mood and hope for the day vanished. Without saying anything more, she ripped the door open, went through it, and then started to slam it shut. At the last second, she decided maybe she didnât want to slam the door and tried to stop it. She partially succeeded. The door shut with a bang, but it didnât shake the wall.
Down the hall she went and out the door to find Jason sitting in front of her grandmotherâs building, his car idling.
He was alone.
âWant a ride?â
âWhat?â she said stupidly. Again she checked the car for passengers. Surely he wasnât picking her up alone? Was some scary jack-in-the-box clown going to jump out at her the minute she opened the door?
âIâm picking Alita up, and you were on the way,â he said slowly. âWould you like a ride?â
Not a jack-in-the-box clown. Something worse.
âSure,â she said because she didnât know what else to say. She opened the door and gingerly climbed inside.
âGood morning,â he said and then yawned.
âMorning,â she admitted. It was, indeed, morning. âDid you just get up?â she asked because she felt like she had to make conversation and he had just yawned.
âOh no. Iâve been up for hours. Had weightlifting this morning.â
Oh, of course he had.
