chapter thirty-one

Andi eyed her friend, trying to read her body language and tone.

Did Mariella have a crush on Alpine?

The thought nearly startled Andi. But that was the impression she had based on the way Mariella defended the man.

Mariella was so different than Andi. Truthfully, Andi had a hard time understanding the woman sometimes. That didn’t make Mariella a bad person. But Andi needed to know she could trust her, that the woman would look out for the team and not just herself and her own agenda.

“Maybe we should all just take a breather,” Simmy murmured, clenching her hands in front of her on the table as she frowned.

Andi cleared her throat, trying to break some of the tension around them. “I’m sorry we’re not seeing eye to eye.”

Mariella stared at Andi another moment before softening her shoulders and sighing. “Could you add whatever changes you’d like to the contract? Then, if Alpine agrees to them, we’ll all sign.”

“That sounds reasonable,” Andi said.

Mariella offered a quick nod, apprehension still in her gaze. “Great. What about Keith Morrison?”

“What about him?” Andi asked.

Irritation flashed in Mariella’s gaze before quickly disappearing. “Did you think any more about being interviewed?”

“That’s nonnegotiable for me.” Andi shook her head. “I don’t want to be interviewed. But you can be.”

“If we have Keith Morrison’s interview and Alpine’s resources behind us, then we’d be unstoppable. You need to think about that, Andi.” Mariella stared at Andi as if that would drive home her message.

Unstoppable? Andi wasn’t so sure about that.

She still had a lot of reservations about all this. The podcast. The investigation. Their ability to all work together.

However, she was never one to back away from a challenge.

Andi intended on seeing this case through until the end.

After that . . . then she’d have to make a judgment call.
