Hetty

MORTIFIED

It was marvellous watching the different parts of this wedding, though all Hetty longed for was the reception dinner to start. She nearly swooned when a plate was finally placed in front of her. The food was unlike anything she had tasted before. She savoured each mouthful.

Davey had topped up her wine so much she was unsure how many glasses she’d drunk. She hated it when he did that. One, because it meant she lost count of what she’d drunk, and two, because she felt like she should be able to choose when she wanted another drink and not have it foisted on her. She knew he was only being kind, but she didn’t want to make a complete twat of herself in front of his entire family. Mind you, both Ailsa and Jules were still holding out their glasses for more.

There had been a weird conversation between Jules and Ailsa about eating animals. Struggling with the whole ‘eating meat’ thing, she was always torn between never wanting to touch an animal product again and falling face-first into a rare steak Davey had cooked for her at home in Brighton. Then it was hard. A lovely lettuce leaf versus a bloody steak and chips? Hmm…

It was when Ailsa said ‘I don’t feel guilty. It’s them or us. A dog-eat-dog world’ and Jules responded that Ailsa had never felt guilty for anything in her life, and when she said, ‘Nothing. Don’t worry about it’ that Hetty thought there was, indeed, something to worry about and was pleased it was not directed at her. It had never occurred to her that twins might not get on. All she’d ever seen were photos of twins dressed the same, same hairstyle, shoes and probably knickers. That was a bizarre thought in itself. Yet these two seemed to be spitting glass shards at each other with big smiles on their faces.

It was odd when Ailsa rushed from the table, leaving that expensive beef dish cooling on her plate. Hetty stopped eating for a moment. She wasn’t ill, was she? Had she caught whatever J.J. had? Were they all going to get it? Especially considering the French tradition of kissing both cheeks. Were they all spreading something ghastly at a rate of knots? Another Covid variant? Was she feeling ill herself? No. Best not to waste that gorgeous grub, then.

‘What do you make of our big, fat French wedding?’ Davey grinned at her. ‘Enjoying the show so far?’

‘It’s great.’

‘Ostentatious enough for you?’

‘It’s beautiful, and it suits them.’ Hetty picked up her glass and gulped a swig of wine, hoping he didn’t interpret that to mean his family were ostentatious. Even if they were. The white wine from before had been changed into a red. When had that happened? Even the glasses had changed shape. That wasn’t due to the mushrooms, was it? Was she now hallucinating? But of course not. It was simply a posh dinner with trained waiters who were invisible.

Davey leaned in close. ‘I can’t remember if I told you, but French weddings go on until sunrise.
