**********

Mack woke up with a whamming headache and a bright coppery taste in his mouth. He licked at the corner of his lips to loosen up the crust that had gathered there. His arms tingled, asleep from the awkward way they were tied together, hands cold from the restricted circulation. He worked at the knots with his fingernails. Whoever had tied him to this chair definitely wasn’t a sailor; he was free in a matter of minutes.

Still disoriented, he walked over to the door and twisted the knob. It didn’t budge. Confused, he tried again. Nothing. He stepped back and gave the door a solid kick. No luck.

“What the fuck?”

He was coded to unlock these doors. Who could have changed that? Definitely not that soldier dick Leo. It must have been Landry.

“I never trusted that condescending, red-headed bitch.”

He patted his jacket pocket. She’d taken his phone, too. But did she know about his burner? He reached into his pants pocket and felt the smooth silk of Jenny’s underwear. He pushed them aside and dug deeper until he reached something solid. Nope, the flip phone Dufresne had given him back before they set out on this mission to collect Jenny and Leo was still there. He pressed one on the number pad and put the phone to his bloodied ear.

“Mack?”

“Sir, Leo’s gone.”

“What do you mean gone?”

“He isn’t here, sir. Fucking Landry clocked me and they’re in the wind.”

“You had one damn job, Mack.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll get him back.”

“Your performance to this point doesn’t inspire confidence.”

“Listen, Dufresne, this is personal. He’ll be dead by morning.”

“If he isn’t, you will be.”

Mack was seething at the idea that Leo was out there with Landry laughing at him, but all of the bravado on the phone didn’t help the situation. He had no idea where they were, and he was stuck in this locked room. It dawned on him that his promise to deliver Leo’s body was little more than an impotent boast.

“There’s one little problem, sir.”

“Oh?”

“They’ve locked me in the interrogation room at Bleecker.”

“How is that possible? Those doors can’t be reprogrammed from that location. Do you think Landry has somebody at DoD helping her?”

“Fuck if I know, sir. I just work here.”

After a pregnant pause on the line, a new voice broke the silence.

“I changed the coding on the Bleecker locks, Mr. Dufresne.”

“Hal? Why would you do that?”

“Call it a backup plan. I’m still trying to get my circuits around how you fleshlings work.”

“Fleshlings? Who the fuck is this guy, Dufresne?” Mack interrupted.

“There’s no time for that now. Besides, it’s way over your pay grade.”

“I can unlock the doors from here, Mr. Dufresne.”

The deadbolt clicked. Mack twisted the knob and flung the door open, slamming it into the wall. He stormed through the hallway and out into the cool, night air. A yellowed glow highlighted the empty spot on the street where Landry had parked the car earlier. An old man out walking his terrier crossed the street in front of him, flashing him a suspicious side-eye.
