Chapter 19

Emma

A few hours had passed since I snuck out of Wilder's room and returned to my place. I was too shy to stick around and also freaked by the thought of Vivian and Harold finding out I was sleeping with Wilder, whom I supposedly detest.

What was I supposed to say to that? And anyway, I was also anxious as to what would become of Wilder and me after last night and what the previous night meant.

Wilder had told me he cared about me, but I wasn't sure what that meant to a playboy like him. But I knew it meant something huge to me. I care about you. The words kept ringing in my head nonstop, making me anxious and crazy. The weight of those words seemed to consume me entirely, leaving me feeling both on edge and elated.

Attempting to regain my composure, I shifted my focus back to my closet, which I hadn't been paying attention to, and I finally snagged an outfit. I changed into loose black pants and a white fitted blouse with a jacket. I applied some mascara and red lip gloss, pulling my hair into a ponytail. I stole a glance at myself in the mirror, and I couldn't help but admire the overall look before hurrying out of the house to work.

The mere thought of encountering Wilder at work ignited a surge of nervousness and anticipation within me. But despite my anxiety, I found myself eagerly awaiting the chance to see him again. I arrived at work some minutes later and went to my office, sitting around and waiting for him to arrive.

I occasionally peeked out the door, anxiously checking if Wilder had arrived. I did this multiple times, but he seemed to be running late. As I waited, my thoughts drifted to Vivian, and a sudden realization hit me—I hadn't checked in with her since last night. Damn! I bet she was worried about me.

Feeling the urgency to call Vivian, I reached into my bag for my phone to contact her but, unfortunately, I couldn't find it. I turned my bag inside out on my desk, but I still couldn't find it.

Did I forget it at home? I wondered, trying to recall the last time I used it, but my memory drew a blank.

I heard a door slam outside, and I instantly forgot all about the phone. I went to the door to check if Wilder had arrived and was glad to know he had. I hastily grabbed the paperwork on my desk and went to his office. Standing outside his door, I took a deep breath, attempting to calm my mounting anxiety.

As I raised my fist to knock, the door swung open abruptly. My hand hovered only inches away from colliding with Wilder's chest. Startled, I quickly dropped my hand to my side, the knot in my stomach tightening. "Good morning," I gushed.

"Morning," Wilder's eyes drifted to my hand. "That would have been quite the punch," Wilder teased, and a nervous laugh escaped my lips.
