CHAPTER 23

Ashley

What the hell am I doing?

First of all—he’s my boss.

Second of all—he’s my father’s best friend.

Third of all—he’s fifteen years older than I am.

And fourth of all—he’s clearly moved on. I’m just the distant little car in his rearview mirror.

Somehow, point number four is the only one that seems to matter to me at the moment. Of course she’s gorgeous. And of course I’d made the poor decision of stalking her a little on my phone on the cab ride over here.

When Ashton had asked me what I was doing, I just told him that I was texting my aunt in Scottsdale. Yeah I know. Pathetic.

Basically Jasmin Kaminsky not only graduated magna cum laude from Yale seven years ago. She also models part time. Gone are the days when you could see a pretty woman and just assume she was as dumb as a bag of rocks. Most women are beautiful and smart.

Goddammit.

Of course he’d seen right through me. Called me out and everything. If that weren’t bad enough, she’d run into us fighting outside the rest rooms. I wonder if he’s having an awkward conversation with her right now. Kinda like the one I see myself having with Ashton in a couple of seconds. From the look on his face, he’s definitely noticed something too.

“Jesus, did you know that Ackerman’s at this restaurant too?”

I clear my throat. “Is he?”

“Yup, right over at that table. I saw him head to the rest room a little while after you left.”

I try my hardest not to cringe. “What a coincidence. I guess if he’d here we know the place is gonna be good.”

“Yeah… if it’s uncomfortable for you, we can leave.”

Instead of being smart and taking the opportunity to leave, I find myself shaking my head. “No, I’m good to stay.”

“Okay,” Ashton says with a shrug. “Guess Jasmin’s back then.”

My eyes go wide but I try not to look too interested. “Jasmin?”

“The woman he’s with. He dated her for a few months a while back.”

“How long is a while?”

He shrugs. “Dunno… over a year ago definitely. Then she disappeared and he replaced her with another blonde. But I guess she’s back in the game.”

“Do you know why they broke up?”

“Nah. I can’t even say that they broke up. You have to be together first in order to break up with someone.”

“Right,” I mumble. “Tobias doesn’t do relationships. He has dates.”

“What was that?”

“Nothing,” I say quickly before noticing Tobias and Jasmin walking towards their table. I try my best not to make eye contact. My only option is to throw myself into this dinner with Ashton.

“So, what brought you to Cali?”

“A chance for a fresh start I guess. I was getting restless in Scottsdale. I’ve lived there my entire life, it was time for a change.”

“And college?”

“I dropped out.”

“No way. Really?”

He looks like he thinks a little less of me now. “Do I detect some judgment?” I ask, calling him out on it.

“No. I’m just surprised. You seem like the kinda girl who follows through.
