Liam was waiting in the parking lot of Kurtâs apartment building when Mark showed up.
âRebecca made me dinner tonight. Sheâs got it in the stove keeping it warm,â Liam said by way of greeting.
Mark grunted. âShe should get used to that. It comes with being a copâs wife.â
âFingers crossed,â Liam said.
âYou donât think sheâll turn you down, do you?â
âIâm never quite sure what sheâs going to do,â Liam said.
âWell, at least that keeps life interesting.â
âThatâs one word.â
âWhatâs wrong with interesting?â Mark asked.
âItâs the subject of a Chinese curse. May you live in interesting times.â
âYeah, well if you wanted peace and tranquility and all that other stuff you shouldnât have become a cop.â
âI became a cop so other people could have those things,â Liam said.
âNoble. A bit stupid maybe, but noble.â
âAnd why did you become a cop?â
âTo be honest, I donât think I remember anymore,â Mark said, looking at a rickety looking flight of stairs. âThis place doesnât have an elevator does it?â
âFrom the looks of it this place was built before that was a requirement,â Liam said.
âGreat.â
âSo, why are we here?â Liam asked.
âSomeone went on a website and posted a picture of a cotton candy girl and said he was looking for her.â
âYou think the killer did that?â
âMaybe.â
âThatâs a gutsy move,â Liam said.
âThatâs one way of looking at it.â
âAnyway, this guy Kurt admitted to knowing all of them but wouldnât give out their information.â
âSo, you think the killer would actually track him down looking for it?â Liam asked, skepticism in his voice.
âI know, itâs a longshot, but itâs all we got.â
They made it upstairs and headed down the row of apartments until they found Kurtâs. Mark knocked on the door and waited.
The door to the apartment next door opened and a woman stared out.
âYou the police?â she asked.
âYes, maâam,â Liam said.
âItâs about time. Itâs been forever since I called in that complaint.â
âExcuse me, maâam, which complaint?â Mark asked quickly.
âAbout them, next door. I donât know what they have going on, but there was a whole lot of screaming,â she said.
âMaâam, we need you to get back inside,â Liam said.
She closed the door and Mark looked at Liam.
âSomeone screaming for help might be what she heard,â he said.
âWorks for me,â Mark said.
Mark reached out and grabbed the doorknob. It was unlocked.
Liam pulled his gun as Mark pushed the door open. Liam moved quickly inside, through the main room and into the back.
Mark made it into the main room and stopped.
âClear!â Liam shouted from the back before returning.
Mark stared at a body on the ground. The man was bloody and unmoving. It looked like someone had beaten the guy to death. Mark crouched down next to the body to get a closer look. Swollen and discolored as the face was, he still recognized it from the picture he had seen earlier.
It was Kurt.
