CHAPTER 9
Lincoln didnât want to be nervous. Nerves only added to the tension that forever lined his forehead, tension that seem to have eased in recent days since heâd been here in Muskoka. Until heâd sent that message. Or maybe since heâd gone to church. The two seemed entwined somehow: Jackie, church, or maybe Jackie and God. For so long heâd shut down any thought of God, but nowâ¦
It was like heâd started noticing, like his ears had a radar-like way of tuning into mentions of God, just as his eyes now paid attention to the perfection of nature. Nature couldnât have just happened like that. It didnât make sense that the beautiful order of things just happened out of the random chaos of a big bang. But it made sense if it was designed by a Creator.
His life made more sense if designed by a Creator, too. Who was he otherwise? What was the point of a brief passage of time called life without heaven on the other side? And more than that, he felt this inner urging to respond, to make things right, a feeling that in coming to Muskoka he was actually finding his way home. Which was kind of dumb. Heâd last lived here over two decades ago. His visits to his grandparents he could count on one hand. But it was more than that. It was like the preacher had said the other day about that lost son. Lincoln felt like that. Lost, but with the strangest sense that he could possibly soon be found.
âMorning.â He nodded to the Golden Elms staff on the front desk, sliding his ID so they could check his name.
The trainee nurse from the other day beamed at him. âGood morning. Mr. McKinnon is looking forward to seeing you, sir.â
Sir? It made him sound like an old man but heâd take it. Better that than her dropping his name and all and sundry knowing who was here.
He nodded, pivoted to leave, then spun back. âIs Ms. OâHalloran in today?â
Some of the pleasure in her smile dialed back a notch. âSheâs on duty, yes.â
âThanks.â He turned away before any more of her disappointment could touch him.
This. This was what he was nervous about. Heâd sent the message, but Jackie hadnât responded. He knew sheâd seen it, had read it, but she hadnât answered. And all of that begged the question why?
Hadnât he been subtle enough? Or had he been too subtle? He wanted to see her, but dreaded that she might say no, that she might cut him loose, that she might want nothing more to do with him. Heâd thought lunch had gone well, and had applauded himself for not instantly following it with an offer for a date. She was a funny mix of openness and reserve, and sheâd seemed a little distant after the discussion about God and church. But then, heâd figured that all of this was probably overwhelming, so heâd let it slide. But had at least thought sheâd be open to seeing him again.
