A week after my visit to the YMCA with Willie, I was sitting in the library by myself, studying for an upcoming English exam. Three senior members of the varsity wrestling squad, Rory Hawke, Ray Purcell, and Joey Trafonte, sat down at my table. Judging from appearances, they were looking to stir up some trouble

“Hey, fag,” Rory said, “What are you reading. I bet it’s a book of fairy tales, knowing you.”

“You’re right, Rory,” I replied. “In fact, I just got to my favorite story, Rumpelforeskin.”

Despite the apparent attempt at intimidation, Ray and Joey could not restrain themselves, and let out a sudden burst of laugher, which elicited a glare from Mrs. Ellis, the school librarian. “Thanks for asking,” I continued. “Hey, maybe I should go out for wrestling next year, instead of basketball. I can’t believe where you guys grab each other. It might really be the right sport for a guy like me.” I followed this up with a smile and a big wink.

“C’mon guys, let’s get out of here. This fag isn’t worth wasting our time on,” Rory said with an annoyed look on his face.
