Chapter 11
Liz parked off in the grass, careful not to block residents from the front gate. She shut the car off and cast an anxious glance at the man inside the guard shack. âWhat should I ask again?â
âStart by telling him youâre concerned for your safety since youâre staying at the dead manâs house, and then ask questions along the lines of if he noticed any suspicious behavior lately,â Lucy advised.
âRight.â Liz wiped her sweaty palms on the front of her capris while Lucy grabbed the container of goodies. âHere goes nothing.â
The women exited the vehicle and made their way to the guard shack.
âHello, Steven.â Liz forced a smile as she lifted the container. âWe brought something for you.â
âMs. Applegate.â
âWeâ¦uh were thinking of how boring it must be sitting inside this tiny guard shack all day long and figured we would bring you some goodiesâ¦to show our appreciation for taking such good care of the residents.â
âIt does get kind of boring, except for the last couple of days.â
Lizâs heart skipped a beat. Steven had given her the opening she was hoping for. âI have to admit Iâm still on edge about Mr. Everlingâs death. Iâm keeping the doors locked and feel much more secure knowing youâre here guarding the community.â She handed him the container. âThis is a small token of my appreciation.â
âThanks.â Steven took the container. âA+ Security Company is one of the best security companies in Montbay County, and we take the residentâs safety seriously.â
âI can see that,â Liz said. âIâm sure the authorities have questioned you about the death.â
âYeah. Theyâve been up here asking lots of questions. I told them about Mr. Everlingâs party Friday night, and they were mighty interested in who showed up. We had to turn over the guest roster, so maybe theyâre close to figuring out who killed Mr. Everling.â
Lucy and Liz exchanged a quick glance. âMr. Everling had a party here Friday just a few hours before his death?â Lucy asked.
âHe did. I told the investigators it wasnât uncommon for Mr. Everling to have a few people over. He was always good about updating us when he was leaving town so we could keep an eye on the place. Thatâs how I knew you were arriving Sunday morning after Mr. Everling left town for his golf tour.â
âThe party Friday night at his placeâ¦did you know any of the guests?â Liz asked.
âA few of them. There were a couple Iâd never seen before. Like I said, the investigators took the list. Itâs a good thing we keep a backup copy on the computer.â
âYou still have the records?â Lucy asked.
âYes, maâam. We log all visitors into the system at the end of every day in case something happens to the manual list and vice versa.â Steven lifted the lid on the container and perused the contents. âThese look delicious.â
âThe owner of Dotâs Restaurant over in Belhaven made these. Dotâs brownie bites are the best,â Lucy said. âSo you keep a list of everyone who comes in here each day.
