Chapter 11

Liz parked off in the grass, careful not to block residents from the front gate. She shut the car off and cast an anxious glance at the man inside the guard shack. “What should I ask again?”

“Start by telling him you’re concerned for your safety since you’re staying at the dead man’s house, and then ask questions along the lines of if he noticed any suspicious behavior lately,” Lucy advised.

“Right.” Liz wiped her sweaty palms on the front of her capris while Lucy grabbed the container of goodies. “Here goes nothing.”

The women exited the vehicle and made their way to the guard shack.

“Hello, Steven.” Liz forced a smile as she lifted the container. “We brought something for you.”

“Ms. Applegate.”

“We…uh were thinking of how boring it must be sitting inside this tiny guard shack all day long and figured we would bring you some goodies…to show our appreciation for taking such good care of the residents.”

“It does get kind of boring, except for the last couple of days.”

Liz’s heart skipped a beat. Steven had given her the opening she was hoping for. “I have to admit I’m still on edge about Mr. Everling’s death. I’m keeping the doors locked and feel much more secure knowing you’re here guarding the community.” She handed him the container. “This is a small token of my appreciation.”

“Thanks.” Steven took the container. “A+ Security Company is one of the best security companies in Montbay County, and we take the resident’s safety seriously.”

“I can see that,” Liz said. “I’m sure the authorities have questioned you about the death.”

“Yeah. They’ve been up here asking lots of questions. I told them about Mr. Everling’s party Friday night, and they were mighty interested in who showed up. We had to turn over the guest roster, so maybe they’re close to figuring out who killed Mr. Everling.”

Lucy and Liz exchanged a quick glance. “Mr. Everling had a party here Friday just a few hours before his death?” Lucy asked.

“He did. I told the investigators it wasn’t uncommon for Mr. Everling to have a few people over. He was always good about updating us when he was leaving town so we could keep an eye on the place. That’s how I knew you were arriving Sunday morning after Mr. Everling left town for his golf tour.”

“The party Friday night at his place…did you know any of the guests?” Liz asked.

“A few of them. There were a couple I’d never seen before. Like I said, the investigators took the list. It’s a good thing we keep a backup copy on the computer.”

“You still have the records?” Lucy asked.

“Yes, ma’am. We log all visitors into the system at the end of every day in case something happens to the manual list and vice versa.” Steven lifted the lid on the container and perused the contents. “These look delicious.”

“The owner of Dot’s Restaurant over in Belhaven made these. Dot’s brownie bites are the best,” Lucy said. “So you keep a list of everyone who comes in here each day.
