I woke up on New Year’s Eve an hour earlier than usual. I didn’t think Blue had sneaked into the room and reset the clock. I wondered if that meant that Lou woke up an hour earlier than usual to stay that far ahead of me. I remembered what lay ahead of me and burst from the bed. Okay, I crawled out of bed and stumbled into the other room and gazed over at Blue, still in his bed in front of the fireplace. He wasn’t planning on going anywhere. There was no reason for him to get up early. He gave me a look that said, “Why are you disturbing my sleep?” I gave him one back that said, “You don’t own this place.” His return look reminded me that I didn’t own it either. We were both at the mercy of the Foundation. I only lived there and had all the money I did because of a murder I solved. And I had to remain in that house to keep the money. Well, I had to stay there for ten years to keep it. After that, it was mine no matter what I did.

I remembered that I didn’t have to concern myself about breakfast, so I toyed with whether to shower first or spend my time with God. Blue put his paw over his nose, so I decided to shower first, even though I knew that I didn’t smell that bad. I knew he was only doing that because he wanted the living room all to himself for a few more minutes. I was beginning to wonder if Garfield was his hero. I thought it was time that I told him that Garfield is a cat. That would mess up his mind. I am sure that Blue thinks cats are inferior to dogs. But then I think Blue thinks that anyone is inferior to himself. Or maybe he just thinks that he is superior to me. Or does he merely want to mess with my mind? My mind was already messed with. I had too many other things on it and what I was going to eat for breakfast wasn’t one of them.

I showered, washed my hair, and spent a few minutes doing my “Mirror, mirror on the wall” routine, to which I swore that the mirror wrote “Jennifer” in the condensation each time I asked who is the fairest of them all. But then I could have been the one who wrote it. It was still too early for me to know for sure what I was doing. I was sure God didn’t mean for any of us to get up before the sun was high in the sky. I was sure that was in Genesis somewhere. One of the early chapters. Before the earth got cluttered with too many humans.

I forgot about Blue’s thoughts and getting up too early. I got dressed, spent time with God, and called Lou to see if he was ready to go.
