CHAPTER 26
That night, Sofia finally called. âSorry Iâve been MIA,â she said.
âOh, itâs OK. Work. I totally understand.â He tried to sound nonchalant. If he pretended that everything was fine, then maybe it would be. âSof, you wonât believe what Iâve found out about Nicholas,â he pressed on. âIâm in Wisconsin right now, flying home tomorrow. I canât believe how gullible Iâve been, thinking that he was just misunderstood, thinking that heââ
âLuke, we need to talk.â
âOK.â
âThis is getting to be too much.â
âWhat do you mean?â The prickling sensation was coming on full force, the top of his scalp hijacked by bees.
âI told you at the outset that I wasnât looking for a relationship. But I think your feelings have changed.â
âOK?â
âMine havenât.â
âOK.â
âSay something more than âOK.ââ
But Lucas couldnât speak.
âItâs been amazing spending all of this time with you. But weâre not on the same page.â¦â
âIf being together is amazing, why stop?â
âBecause itâs not real.â
Lucas felt everything spin. Not real? He had a vision of Sofia in the abandoned casket factory, shivering and smiling as she posed for him. Youâre my muse, Lucas. âHow can you possibly say that, after everything weâve shared?â
âLucasââ
Yes, theyâd been playacting at first. But over time, that had changed. If only heâd kept his mouth shut at Nicholasâs party, they could have gone on as before. And then one day, Sofia would realize that there was no distinguishing the fantasy from the reality. Instead, in the spirit of open communication, heâd been honest with her. And that honesty had forced Sofia to make a real-worldâas opposed to a pretend-worldâdecision.
âYouâre deluding yourself,â he said now. âYouâre scared to admit the truth.â
âThatâs extremely patronizing,â she replied. âTelling me I donât know myself. However this feels to you, Lucas, itâs not like that for me. Iâm sorry. I thought you understood. I thought you could handle this kind of relationship. But you havenât been single for very long. It makes sense that youâd grow attached.â
âAnd you call me patronizing?â
There was a pause. âIâm sorry,â she said. âThat wasnât nice.â
Lucas snorted. Nice. Like they were kids on the playground.
âLook,â she said. âYou donât need me anymore. Your columns have been great. Youâve got Carmen on the defensive.â
âI donât care about the fucking columns!â
âIâm sorry,â she repeated, but meekly as though shrinking from his outburst.
Something occurred to him. âHow long have you known I had feelings for you?â
She said nothing. His head was buzzing so badly, he wanted to scratch his scalp off.
âHow long, Sofia!â
Silence.
So it had been weeks, if not months. âYou knew how I felt and you strung me along, letting me hope? Why would you do that? You want to talk about nice? That wasnât nice.â
âWe were having fun,â she said. She sounded defensive. âYou were having fun.â
âI was falling in love with you and you let it happen!â Lucas heard her start to protest, but he quickly ended the call and threw his phone on the bed. All along he thought heâd been competing with Carmen. But she was not his adversary.
