Mitchellâs pulse pounded as his gaze met Hazelâs widened eyes.
âJackson, are you okay?â She yelled into the radio.
âYesâwith Teddy and Elijahâtook Stanâs radio.â His broken words told Mitchell they were in a remote area.
Hazel smiled at her sonâs message. âThatâs okay. Tell me where you are.â
âHidingâcaveââ
âJackson! What cave?â Hazelâs tone raised a pitch as alarm flashed on her pretty face.
Silence answered.
âJackson?â
Nothing.
âBear Cub, come again!â Frankâs voice cracked, exposing the emotion heâd demanded Hazel contain earlier.
The radio waves remained silent.
Hazelâs forehead crinkled as defeat was once again displayed on her forlorn expression.
Mitchell rubbed her back. âHeâs safe, Hazel. Firebug doesnât have them.â
Her eyes narrowed. âWhat makes you say that?â
âBecause he said they were hiding. Thatâs a good sign, right?â He reached to move a stray strand out of her eyes, then dropped his hand.
Not here, Mitch. Youâre not alone.
âHeâs right, Hazel. And he has a radio. He could call again.â Bree walked between them, nudging him away from her best friend. His sister turned her gaze to him.
Her glaring eyes told him one thing.
Stay away from my friend.
âBut why didnât he call earlier?â Hazel asked.
âMaybe they were out of range or something.â Frank pulled out his map and gestured his daughter to a nearby picnic table. âLetâs rethink our search and look at all known caves.â He sat and spread out the map.
Hazel hesitated.
Frank glanced over his shoulder. âCome on, Hazel. Now! We have lots of ground to cover.â
She lurched into motion and sat across from her father.
âMitch, I need to talk to you.â Breeâs whispered words spoke volumes. She walked to the edge of the clearing, beckoning him to follow.
She was upset with him for some strange reason.
Great. This was all he needed right now. An angry sister.
He followed. âWhatâs wrong, Bree?â
She placed her fisted hands on her hips. âStop crushing on Hazel.â
Where did that come from? âWhat? Iâm not.â Liar. You are. He suppressed his thoughts, as he wouldnât admit that to his sister.
Bree poked his chest. âYou are. I see the way you look at her. Stay away.â
âWeâre just friends.â Heat surged and sat on the edge of his emotions. âDonât tell me what to do. Youâve done that too much lately.â
âOh, weâre on this topic again. I did not demand you speak at Momâs funeral.â
Mitchell threw his hands in the air. âSis, I donât want to fight. Itâs neither the time nor the place.â
She tilted her head. âYou brought it up and we have to talk about it someday. Mitch, I want you back in my life. Iâve missed you. This past year has been hard. Losing Mom, and then you too.â
âBree, the crack in our relationship started with Ivy, not when Mom died.â Why couldnât Mitchell let it go? He longed for a stronger bond between them.
His sister let out an extended, audible sigh. âHow many times do I have to say Iâm sorry? She was trouble, and I wanted to warn you. Girls know these things, bro.â
Mitchell massaged the knot in his shoulder.
