Duke had been gone ten minutes. Andi was keeping track of the time, just waiting for something else to go wrong. She prayed that wasn’t the case while trying to prepare herself for the worst.

What if someone caught Duke outside? What if Lockjaw picked up on what they were doing?

She sat with her ear pressed against the wall so she could hear whatever happened in the other room.

She heard Lockjaw’s phone ring. Heard him answer. Heard him asking questions. Grunt. Ask more questions.

Then the call ended.

Seconds later, Lockjaw spoke again.

He’d called someone else, Andi realized.

“I just got a tip,” Lockjaw said, his voice gruff. “This man thinks some people he knows saw Andi. He sounds legit. She’s apparently wearing a dark wig and going incognito at an Indian reservation or village or whatever people call them around here.”

Pause.

“This guy said she always says, ‘Am I right?’ Sounds like that annoying catchphrase Andi always used.”

Yes, the smoking gun.

Would Lockjaw fall for it?

Andi waited, nervously rubbing her fingers together.

“I’m going to head out and see if I can catch her,” Lockjaw finally said. “There’s no time to waste.”

Another pause.

“I’ll go now. I don’t need a lot of sleep. With any luck, I’ll be back this way so I can talk to my friend in Coldfoot by tomorrow.”

Movement sounded inside the room. A moment later, the door opened then closed. Footsteps sounded.

The team glanced at each other.

It appeared Duke’s plan had worked.

Lockjaw was leaving. They could all let down their guard—just a little at least.

But Andi refused to relax until she knew Victor was behind bars.
