16 - If you wait long enough
Jennifer and crew piled into the old Station Wagon and took off following Eliâs directions. GPS was out of the question since reception was spotty and, besides, half the roads werenât even mapped. Many were not even paved. Finally they reached the cabin where Joe Hatton and the lawmen still stood, talking.
JOE HAD MORE PRESSING matters than picking up his boy from school. So the time of day didnât register, but the Station Wagon was vaguely familiar. He said to Langston, âMatt, ainât that your mamaâs old car?â
The Sheriff furrowed his brow. âYep.â He strode over as the car stopped and Jen got out, followed by the others.
âDad are you okay?â Jennifer asked, throwing her arms around him.
âIâm fine, Jen. But why did youââ
âWoah!â she exclaimed, leaning back. âYou smell like whiskey.â She extricated herself to catch her breath.
Langston shot Joe a look. âMoonshine to be exact.â He turned back to her, noticed his grandkids and smiled wide. âSarah and Cody?â
âGrandpa!â Sarah went into his arms. Cody moved closer but was not as exuberant.
Matt reached with a long arm and snagged the boys sleeve, pulling him in. He took both in a bear hug. âItâs been too long! You younguns are growing up on me.â They all emerged from the embrace smiling at each other.
Shekinah was next to step into view, Eli hanging back behind her.
âMiss Shekinah? Now Iâm worried,â said Joe. âNot that you ainât welcome. My cabin is yours. I know itâs getting late, but I was about to pick Eli up...â A thought crossed his mind. âAinât given you trouble has he?â Joe craned his neck. âEli, whyâre you hiding behind your teacher?â
Shekinahâs expression was serene as she said, âCome on Eli. I donât think youâre going to keep this a secret.â
When the boy stepped out for all to see, Sorensen and Langston gasped.
Joe studied him a long moment, as if seeing him for the first time, then broke into a huge grin. âAlways had your mamaâs eyes, now youâve got her ears too.â
Eli smiled a bit sheepishly. âAnd donât forget the eyebrows.â
âItâs him,â whispered Sorensen.
That brought a harsh glance from Shekinah. She gripped her walking cane and raised it an inch from the ground. âJoe, Eli, inside with me a moment.â
Joe nodded and motioned to Eli. To the others he said, âBe just a minute. Yâall stick around if you want to talk more. Or if you need to go, thatâs fine too. I can run Shekinah home when sheâs ready.â
The Sheriff spoke up as they headed indoors, â Iâll hang around if itâs all the same. Not used to seeing elves in this part of the country. No offense Eli.â Heâd known the boy since Joe had gotten him.
Eli was between Joe and Shekinah, who were not looking back, so he nodded at the Sheriff before stepping inside.
