GETTING THERE

By Car

Matera can be reached in approximately 1 hour (41 mi/66 km) by car from Bari’s city center. From Brindisi, the 85-mile (136-km) drive takes 1 hour 45 minutes. From Naples, the 155-mile (250-km) trip takes approximately 3 hours.

The central Sassi area is not accessible by car, except with special permits or within limited hours during the day. Fairly convenient parking areas are located on the edge of the city center at Piazza Cesare Firrao (www.accessibilitacentristorici.it), Parcheggio Nicoletti Michele (Via Vincenzo Cappelluti, 1; tel. 0835/330896; www.welcomematera.it; open 24 hours), and the Parcheggio – Stazione Centrale/Tribunale (Viale Aldo Moro) near the train station, each costing approximately €1/hour. It’s worth calling ahead to your accommodation to arrange transport upon arrival, so as to avoid walking through steep, cobblestone streets with a roller bag.
