YES, IT WAS A BORING ride. I had to listen to her grand plans for glorious conquest of all known space.
I just sat there and tried to look interested. Nodded a few times, smiled at the few pathetic jokes she tried to crack.
Put up with her horrible ideas of what fashion was. Almost laughed when she cut herself with her own fingernail, and then couldn't put that finger in her mouth because it would cut her again.
Stupid is as stupid does.
Finally we made port and she got us docked without killing both of us. Seems she was used to a lot of extra people around to moor the ship for her. I was no help, of course, as I was cuffed to the railing inside.
My shrugs infuriated her.
She put more than one dent in her precious yacht before she got the magnetic-lock couplings to hold. Something we âdown-belowsâ all learned as tiny children â because the emergency escape pods all had those couplings. And getting the pods all interlinked was a much better way to survive disaster than by your lonesome.
Stuck-up rich kids don't have to take that training seriously when their lives don't depend on it.
Lucky for her that ship-sized lock was automated to close once her mag-locks finally set.
âOK, here's the key.â She threw it to me neatly. âI'll be outside waiting for you.
I unlocked the cuffs and threw them to the far end of the yacht with the key into the opposite forward end, hoping it wound up in some crack.
Then I came out.
âWhere's the cuffs?â
âInside. You never said anything about bringing them.â
Yes, this made her little over-powdered white face wrinkle. Still, I was right. She needed me for something or I would already be dead. But I also knew my guys knew where I was and was getting all of this in stereo 3D. My little pendant was hanging down inside my red/gray overalls. And I had one of Dad's safety bracelets on one wrist and another on an ankle inside its boot. A gal can't take too many precautions.
Malia waved the gun, and I took it that she meant me to climb up one of the many short ladders so we'd get out of this little ship-lock.
But the weirdest thing I saw was when I walked by her.
The gun's safety was still on.
