CHAPTER ELEVEN

BETRAYED BY BLOOD

I put the book aside and fell asleep on the bed. There was plenty of work and not enough time to do it, so no wonder I was tired. I woke up as I felt somebody in the room beside me. It was all dark, and I saw a shadow coming closer to the bed. The shape of it was too big to be Bran, and if it were somebody in the family, they would not be sneaking into our room in the dark. I felt the danger right away but didn’t move. I saw the shadow holding a big knife. When he was about to stab me, I called out, “You don’t want to do this, stand down and drop the knife on the floor.” I called out.

He stopped right away, and I heard the knife drop. Quickly I turned on the lights to see who the intruder was. I was so sad to recognize one of Bran’s brothers.

“Why are you here?” I demanded to know. He was under my control and couldn’t help himself; he answered my question.

“I was sent here to assassinate you before the ceremony.”

“Who gave the order?”

“The true king Mac Nain.”

“Are you alone? Is there anybody else with you?”

“No, I’m alone.”

“Sit down and tell me right now what Mac Nain is planning for the festivities.” He told me everything. There would be an attempt to blow up the ceremony. There would be a barrel of whiskey delivered full of explosives. Mac Nain didn’t care who would get hurt. The more, the better. The explosives would be delivered the day before the ceremony by a truck that they had hijacked. Mac Nain would try to take Bran back, and if not, she was to be killed with everybody else. The whole family was in danger, even the small ones. He gave me a long list of traitors that would be at the ceremony, as well.

I had a very long talk with him and got a clear picture of what the old bastard had planned. Right then, I was so happy to have my powers. Mac Nain would not come to the gathering, but his loyal servants would be there. When I was sure I had gotten everything from him. I only told him that he would remember himself stabbing me and running away after that. He would not recall one word of our conversation. If he got new orders, he would make sure that I would know them as soon as they were made. I let him leave after I was convinced that he would not hurt anybody in my family ever again.

The truck that would be delivered would arrive as planned, but the ones with the explosives would find their way back somehow to Mac Nain. I made sure that nobody was to get hurt but that they would get a clear message not to mess with us. He left as I ordered him to, and I fell on the bed. I think I passed out.
