Chapter 21

The council did not need to know what our business was upon leaving the Breach in the early afternoon the next day. When questioned, I merely told them that we were ‘handling it.’ If they knew we were going on a hunt that was seemingly unrelated, who knows how they would react? Ignorance would be bliss in this situation.

The hills and plains of Marath were normally full of monsters to fight, but with the presence of the Spider, most of them had seemingly vanished. I could scarcely find a pair of tracks to save my life. We were forced to, in the end, move farther to the Northeastern region, which was another jungle of sorts.

I was unfamiliar with the territory of the Northeast and had tried to avoid it in my previous adventures. While the Zinoss Jungle wasn’t terribly dense with foliage, this jungle—known on the map as the Darkshrub Jungle—was jam-packed with all sorts of plants and massive trees that blocked out the sun. They called it Darkshrub for a reason.

“I don’t like the looks of this place,” Suzie stammered as I investigated the pair of footprints at the entrance to the jungle. While the foliage was packed together tightly, something had come through recently, tearing a large hole, knocking over trees and creating a path for us to follow. The footprints were curious though, shaped like the feet of humans. A shapeshifter, perhaps? Or maybe a humanoid parasite, like the Fungara Maestro? Hard to tell.

“Then you’re going to hate going in there even more,” I said, standing up. My tracking system wasn’t informing me of anything just yet. This was a bit odd, considering that my tracking abilities were strong enough to get information just from analyzing tracks. An uneasiness welled up in my stomach, but I tried my best to ignore the feeling. Those fallen trees were a clear sign of a monster at work here.

We formed a line and entered the jungle, moving through the passage. I was in the front, Todd in the center and Suzie brought up the rear. Weapons were all drawn, Todd with his axe, Suzie her spear and for me, I opted to wield Josiah’s Storm, hoping it had an opinion on the situation. But the bow was silent, for now.

Darkness fell over us as we pushed deeper into the jungle. A few beams of light came from above, here and there, giving us enough to see, but not nearly enough to feel at ease with. Worst of all was the silence of this jungle. There were no critters making noises, no birds chirping or bugs buzzing. Just pure, unadulterated silence. The only thing I could hear was my restless heartbeat.

Stay calm, the bow emoted as we pressed forward, deeper and deeper into the dark jungle. You are stronger than what lies ahead. Those feelings emanating from the bow seemed to settle my nerves and I relaxed, focusing more on my senses, paying less attention to my own heart rate and more to the world around me.
