LOCH NESS MONSTER
NEVER THERE, NO DI RECTION
The legend of a monstrously large sea serpent living in the deep, dark waters of Loch Ness, a lake in Scotland, goes back 1,500 years. Reputable people claim to have seen “Nessie.” Believers also offer fuzzy photos and suggestive sonar readings but no incontrovertible evidence. From the PBS program Nova to crackpot Web sites, the debate rages: Is this primeval beast a fairytale, or does it really exist?
As Erich Nilsson walked the long, gleaming parquet hallway toward the corporate boardroom, he told himself he didn’t care what happened at the meeting. In his hand, the notes for his presentation were soaking up the sweat from his palm. He had barely ever been in this poshest area of the headquarters building. He had little idea who was going to be at this meeting and no notion at all of what interested them. Clutching the disk containing his PowerPoint presentation, he mentally reviewed his four major points about the successes of his quality-assurance team. But doubts and ignorance had shredded whatever confidence he might have been able to muster.
Erich had talked over his presentation outline with his wife. He had even asked his mother-in-law about what he should include. The one person who had the information to enlighten him on how to succeed at this meeting was his boss—George. But Erich had never gotten to ask George even one question during the last ten, tense days of preparation.
A little over a week before, George had sent an e-mail telling Erich he “was expected” to present at this “important meeting.” It gave the time and the place and ended with George’s favorite expression. “I know I can count on you.” That was George’s entire concept of management.
After getting the e-mail, Erich had seen George exactly once—during the biweekly staff meeting. Erich had hardly paid attention to the discussion that day, so focused was he on getting to George as soon as the meeting ended so he could ask about the presentation in the boardroom. Speaking before any group made Erich nervous. Just going to the boardroom made him antsy. Not knowing what his presentation was supposed to accomplish absolutely terrified him. If he could corner George, he could at least find out who would attend the meeting and what they wanted to hear about. But then, just as the staff got to the last agenda item, George pulled one of his cute disappearing acts. He announced that he was leaving the last topic—the coordination of the budget process—in Erich’s capable hands. With a warm, winning smile—that smile that had convinced Erich at his interview for this job that George would be the best of all possible bosses—with that same smile, George had said, “Erich, why don’t you take over this meeting now?” It hadn’t really been a question. Before Erich could move out of his seat to the head of the table, George was out the door.
Repeated e-mails, visits to George’s office, and phone messages left on his voice mail and cell phone yielded no response—no insight, no encouragement.
