Clovely fought, kicking and swinging the whole way to the interrogation room, a space like any he’d ever seen in B-rated murder movies – small, one glaring light bulb, one table and a few chairs. He was slammed down into one of those chairs and immediately handcuffed to the arm rest. Four beings crowded in with him, not one of them was human.

“What do you think I’m going to do? Beat you all up and escape?” he rattled the cuffs and glared.

“State your name for the record,” a shifter cop growled.

“Feever Clovely, and I didn’t kidnap or kill anyone.” His mind raced, reciting every Irish prayer he knew. What a life, what an afterlife, and oh damn, what a mess he was in.

Lord, be between us and harm and protect us from the harm of the world, he prayed silently. He stilled to listen for response from the illusive Lord. Nothing. Naturally.

Clovely started his life a few centuries ago, the seventh of thirteen leprechaun children living high and hidden in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. It was a good life, but being the middle child held its own forms of torment. It wasn’t until he died and arrived at the West Hollywood warehouse for wayward dead supernaturals, as he liked to call it, that he completely lost his faith in God. He was the last to bite the bullet and fully expected to see his whole family there. Nope. Instead he found an all new discomfort but also an opportunity to be all the things he never had a chance to be in life. He quickly chose to put his power and quick mind into play. He organized the leprechauns in the tank and made numerous demands. Most were ridiculous, but gave him the leverage to gain what he really wanted for the lep community. Feever Clovely wasn’t stupid.

No, he wasn’t stupid at all and as the cops fired questions at him, he realized he had two distinct paths to follow. Without truly analyzing them, he jumped on the first one.

“Why did you come to Maxtla?”

“I didn’t come to Maxtla,” he responded. “That idiot old witch in the clinic brought us here, I’d stake my bottom dollar on it.”

“Where’s Gabriel Strickland?”

“No fucking clue.”

The big vampire with the flame thrower set the weapon in the corner of the room and stepped closer. Clovely slunk back in his seat.

“You have a damn clue, you little shit. Where is he?”

“I swear, I have no idea. Strickland’s a double-dead vampire and man, he’s got some awesome powers! He put me in a trance and locked me in a bedroom while he made his plans to leave. The bastard deserted us all for all I know.” A sickness came over him, the kind he sensed could incapacitate him. What was that feeling? Could it be guilt? A spark of heat grew in his soul and he tried to shake it off. His breathing accelerated and his heart felt like it would burst out of his chest.
