CHAPTER 17
IF I THOUGHT my declaration of Sethâs control over Carabosse would calm the fight, I was dead wrong.
One of the bewildered guards pointed a gloved finger at me. âSheâs a human!â
âWhereâd she come from?â someone else cried.
More outbursts rose in quick succession, all congealing into one incoherent uproar. A handful of guards who had been surrounding Jack Frost whirled around, their spears pointed straight at me.
Before I could figure out what to do, a heavy weight dropped out of the sky in front of me. Gabriel spread his wings to shield me from an assault, his bellow of rage shaking a series of crystal chandeliers so violently, I worried they would crash down on our heads.
Gabrielâs intervention slowed the guardsâ response. Their spears couldnât penetrate his stone skin. A few of them flipped their weapons around to the hammer side, deciding that might fare better against a gargoyle.
Fortunately for everyone involved, they never got to put their theory to the test. Jack Frost created a cone-like megaphone of ice and put it to his lips, shouting, âEverybody freeze!â
His command reverberated painfully off the walls, causing many to lift their hands to their ears. As much as it hurt, it had the desired effect of quietening the clamor.
Having gotten everyoneâs attention, Jack Frost let the megaphone drop to his side, opting to project his voice instead. âCarabosse is not fit to lead. You have been deceived.â
One of the guards, whoâd surged toward the dais to attack me, faced Jack. âAnd weâre supposed to trust you?â he demanded, his red beard like a flag of his mounting anger. âThe declared traitor to this court?â
âYou tell âem, Captain Tyrell,â the guard beside him encouraged. A murmur of agreement followed, although I noticed that not everyone appeared so certain.
Jack Frost drew himself up tall. âWho declared me a traitor?â
He didnât need to answer his own question, as many furtive eyes flittered toward Carabosse. She was posed in a dramatic heap with her fancy dress and hair sprawled to the side like a fairy tale beauty.
âYou can come to your own conclusions,â Jack said, âbut personally, I wouldnât believe the word of the woman who would have slaughtered you where you stood.â
Several of the commoner fae, who had been spared by Jackâs ice wall, called out, âThe Prince saved us!â
The red-bearded Tyrell wasnât deterred, gesturing at me, half-hidden behind Gabriel. âThen who is this human filth?â
I skirted around Gabrielâs outstretched wings, not willing to take that insult while hiding. âIâm the woman who just saved you, thank you very much.â
Most of the fae shifted uncomfortably at this, but Tyrell snorted in derision. âYou? A human spy?â
âIâm the one who stopped the human spy.â
âProve it!â Tyrell demanded.
I turned to Gabriel. âWould you mind showing these guys who was really underneath those robes?â
âWith pleasure.â Gabriel lumbered over to Sethâs unconscious side, and in one swift motion, he lifted him up while tearing away the fabric around his shoulders.
A collective gasp went through the guards as they stared at Seth Lenoir.
