The respiratory rate was too high. She didn’t like it. Betty stood and turned. Schäfer straightened and looked expectant, almost hopeful. “Double pneumonia. She needs to be in the hospital.”

He shook his head. “That won’t happen. What are our other options?”

“It has to happen. That is the only option.” She did not raise her voice, but she felt the intensity of what she said increase so that he looked over his shoulder before putting a finger to his lips.

“They’ll let her die first. It cost me much to bring you here today,” he murmured in his American English. “What you have to do, has to be done here. Tell me what to do. I will do anything you ask.”

Betty sighed and opened her bag, pulling out a bottle of Sulfapyridine in half-gram pills. “You need to get her to ingest two of these pills at a time,” she instructed as she handed him the bottle. “These are going to make her very sick to her stomach and she will vomit them back up. The longer she has them inside of her before she expels them, the better. Give them to her every four hours.”

She pulled a clean cloth out of a pocket in her cape. “Cleanliness is important. I’ll get you some clean sheets to put on her mattress. Keep a cool rag on her forehead. Wash your hands constantly. Try to get some broth in her between giving her the pills.”

He took the cloth from her when she handed it to him. “Is she going to live?”

Betty smoothed the hair back from Temperance’s face. The heat scared her. “If she were in a hospital under an oxygen tent, I wouldn’t be sure she’d pull through. In these conditions,” she stood and sighed, running her hands over her face, “I don’t know. It’s in God’s hands.”

His lips thinned. “I will give her the medicine.”

“Meet me here tomorrow morning at five. My shift at the hospital starts at seven. That should give me time to get her vitals and check on her after having at least two doses of the medication.”
