CHAPTER 18

It had been days since her tryst with Trent. She hadn’t heard from Detective Ross either. They were both good things. When she had come home after that exceedingly perplexing evening with Trent, Terry was up waiting for her. He claimed he was worried but she knew better. He was just being nosy and wanted to know where she was. It was ironic, but she was too embarrassed to tell him she was finally with the man they had worked so hard to get for so long. She made up some lie about not being able to sleep and going to the nearby empty bus station for some peace and quiet.

She had to practice lying anyway and wanted to be good at it if Detective Ross ever asked her about that night.

So far he hadn’t. So far so good.

“I don’t think you should go back to work.” Terry watched her comb her hair in the bathroom mirror.

“The temp service hasn’t found me another job and I desperately need the money or else I won’t be able to make rent.”

“I’ve got you covered for as long as you need. You know that.”

Terry was still spending money like it was going out of style. Ever since he had lied to her about still having his salon job, she had never brought it up again. Besides, it was really none of her business.

“I can work for myself and don’t need you to cover me.”

She stopped brushing her hair and turned to him. “But, thank you anyway.”

She really did appreciate all the support he had given her.

“Okay, girl, but if you need anything, call me at work.”

She saw this as another opportunity, so she took it.

“Call you where? At the shop?”

He turned and started walking away toward the kitchen, but not before lying to her again.

“No. I have the day off there. Just page me and I’ll call you back.”

She wondered how he could do it. It’d been weeks and he still had the audacity to lie to her face.

It wasn’t her problem. She had other issues to deal with like facing that office and facing Trent. Those were priorities one and two.

She finished up, grabbed her coat, said good-bye to Terry and walked out the door to the bus stop. When she reached the stop Hattie was there looking as if she had been waiting for her for the past few days.

“Well, I’m surprised to see you here,” she said. “I thought you done upped and moved to Mars.”

“No, I just had a few days off.”

“If you don’t mind me saying . . .”

She did mind her saying, but she knew she was going to say it anyway.

“You look like you need a few more days off. What happened to you?”

“Just tired.” Jordan did her neck stretching mime thing looking down the road for the bus.

“Honey, whatever has been going on in your life can’t be all that bad that it can’t be fixed.” Hattie inhaled deeply. “Take a mirror and look at yourself.
