Walking and Weapons

Dave wagged his tail happily. He loved going on walks. The kitten Cupcake was also excited to join the walk and even liked wearing a leash like the dogs. However, Amy’s dog Miss Marshmallow was feeling prissy. She decided that she needed to be carried for the rest of the walk.

Amy kept grumbling but was indulging the dog, rationalizing that she was little and maybe she was tired.

Heather felt it was good to get out in the fresh air. Between thinking about the wedding and the murder, her mind felt exhausted. She liked focusing on the animals for a while.

Josie was joining them, but she seemed to sense that they needed some quiet time. She did acknowledge the beauty of the island every so often when she saw a tree or beach in the distance that she liked.

Heather’s phone rang, shattering her peace and quiet. However, she always answered when Ryan called, and it was likely that he would have news for her. He didn’t disappoint.

“The medical examiner finished his report.”

“Did he narrow down the time of death?” Heather asked, pulling on Dave’s leash to keep him at a slow pace as she held the phone to her ear.

“I’m afraid not,” Ryan said. “But he did determine the cause of death. It was blunt force trauma. Though the fish display did alter the wounds, he was able to figure out what hit the victim first. It was most likely a tire iron.”

“That’s interesting,” said Heather. “Most people have access to a tire iron, but it probably wouldn’t be found within the shop. The killer must have brought it in with him to commit the murder.”

“That’s what I was thinking,” Ryan agreed.

“Have you had any luck looking into Barry Banes’s life before he arrived here?” asked Heather.

“We’re tracking down the ex-wife to see if she was involved. So far, we haven’t found any other suspects.”

“I’m sure you will.”

She recapped what they had found out from questioning the shop neighbors, told him she loved him and said goodbye.

“Any news?” asked Amy.

Heather explained what she learned about the murder weapon.

“I can’t believe the killer tried to disguise what he did with a big fish,” said Josie.

“Me neither,” said Amy, cuddling her dog. “Did he really think that we would think it had been an accident?”

“We’re lucky that we have a talented medical examiner who can determine these things,” said Heather. “I suppose it also made us more suspicious because we had just been hearing about how everyone wanted the victim to go away and not open his shop.”

“And do you think that one of the neighbors killed him?” asked Josie. “Most of them seemed so nice.”

Cupcake batted at a stone on the ground, and Josie kept her attention on the adorable kitten instead of the thoughts of murder.

“I think it’s possible,” said Heather. “But so far, most of the people we talked to had alibis.”

“Even Mr. Rankle?” asked Josie.

“Nick was staying at his house that night,” said Heather. “Lee from the clothing shop was at a fundraiser for the mayor and then with friends.
