Yet for doctors and scientists in general, the difference between a natural product and a so-called “chemical” or “synthetic” substance seems very artificial. A product that effects the functioning of the human body is an active product, whatever its origin. In addition, several pharmaceutical products are in fact based on natural substances found in plants or produced by animals. Once the active chemical substance has been discovered, it’s synthesized in a laboratory, making the commercial production of medications possible. Several examples of this can be given in the field of migraines. As for the safety of so-called “natural” products, it must be remembered that even the most powerful poisons and toxins we know about are entirely natural: the venoms secreted by snakes and spiders, as well as the poisons in some plants and mushrooms, are deadly. Lastly, some natural products are chemically similar to drugs and may interact with them, a known example being St. John’s wort, used to treat depression, which interacts with antidepressants.
These perceptions about natural products play a very important and sometimes harmful role in migraine management. They may have the effect of scaring patients away from potentially effective treatments.
