Twenty Three
She dropped a duffle bag at her feet.
“Err, hi. I’m Serena, from Thorn’s World, and I’ve just transferred from cadets to midshipman, and been directed here.”
There was silence for a good half minute.
“Hi Serena,” said Jill. “Pick an unused pod, we’ve plenty of them. Stow your stuff, and join us.”
She picked up her bag, cast a quick look along the pods on my side, and walked quickly over to the first one without a name on it. It opened for her, and we watched as she hung her few clothes up, including the yellow dress from last night, and placed a few items on the bed table, before backing out, the pod closed behind her, her name lit up on it, and she came over and sat in an empty chair.
“You were a cadet?” asked Norden, before anyone could start introductions.
“Yes.”
“What made you change?” asked Mel.
“I had no plans to, but immediately after I left the auditorium, Admiral Jane intercepted me, asked me if I wanted to fly over doing anything else for the Imperium, and I said yes. She told me to change my jacket colour, collect my stuff, and come here.”
“Why would she do that?” asked Gitte.
Jill laughed, and we all looked at her.
“At a guess, you told someone you enjoyed flying more than anything else in the training, and one of the AI’s heard you.”
“Pretty much, yes,” said Serena.
“Could be the Trixone attack is accelerating our training,” said Haynes.
There was general agreement along those lines, and I think we all hoped we’d get into a real fighter sooner rather than later.
“I’m Jill,” said Jill belatedly. “Havenite, originally from Earth Sector.”
She went on to introduce and summarize the rest of us, although I knew she knew Serena and I had already met. Jill didn’t miss much, and that yellow dress had stood out on the dance floor. But she didn’t say anything.
Medal ceremony procedures turned out to be a culmination of a lot of procedures, and we mock performed one, with each of us being presented with a medal, with the corresponding bracing to attention, saluting, and making a mock ribbon appear on our uniforms, as well as new insignia on the shoulders. The latter we were especially looking forward to, since this would advance us to ensigns, and make us actual officers. So we took the morning making sure all of us had everything correct and in the right order.
Before leaving for lunch, we changed our walk formation to have Norden bring up the rear on his own, with Serena in his previous place. With simulator after lunch, we discussed how to put an odd number into a squadron formation, and decided to try an actual formation, instead of pairs and a trio.
The afternoon was non-stop Trixone attacks, only now we were part of a much larger carrier based force, where other ships were protecting us from missiles. We still didn’t do very well though, mainly because the simulator seemed to have been updated with Trixone fighter behavior and tactics, and the Brawler was proving to be inadequate.
