CHAPTER 32

Beatrice considered her idea to be a stroke of genius.

But Daniel’s and her father’s expressions of shock mirrored each other.

It seemed to her like a perfect solution.

She had no intention of marrying Wilford. The whole idea of marrying Wilford was absolutely insane.

Daniel, however, was a different story altogether.

He was handsome and respectful.

Besides, she liked his eyes. She liked the way he looked at her.

As though he was actually interested in her.

Even more, he seemed to be a bit lost.

He’d spent the day wandering around and had come back seemingly bewildered.

If Mother was right, Daniel could very well be from another time.

But he didn’t seem to know it.

She wanted him to be safe.

In fact, she realized, she wanted to make sure he stayed here.

And marrying him was not only a way to keep her father from marrying her to Wilford, but a way to make sure Daniel had no reason to leave.

“Do you even know who this man is?” Father, sitting behind his desk, asked in his booming voice.

Father was one of those men that most people wouldn’t dare to disagree with.

If her brother Sam were here, he’d jump in and rescue her.

But he wasn’t. She didn’t even know where her brothers were at the moment. They certainly weren’t there coming to her rescue.

“Of course,” she said with all the bravado she could muster. “His name is Daniel. Daniel…”

She faltered. Daniel… something. She didn’t know his last name.

Father snorted. “So you’re going to take this man’s name, but you don’t even know what that name is.”

He kinda had a point. But she wasn’t willing to admit it.

“It doesn’t matter,” she said. “I’m going to marry him anyway.”

Father clasped his hands in front of him and leaned forward.

The grandfather clock chimed the hour as the seconds passed.

Beatrice kept her gaze firmly on her father’s.

She didn’t dare look over at Daniel. The man no doubt thought she was daft.

Father was first to look away. An odd expression coming over his face, he looked over at Daniel.

“Very well,” Father said. “If that’s what he wants.”

Beatrice jerked her gaze over to Daniel.

He looked, quite honestly, a little green around the gills.

Perhaps, she realized a little too late, she should have run this idea by him first.

Heavens! He might already be married.

Somehow in her desperation, she’d neglected to think about that.

She’d also somehow managed to not think about the possibility that Daniel might not want to marry her.

“So, young fellow,” Father said. “We’re having a wedding here in four days. Will you be marrying my daughter?”
