CHAPTER 10

CAR

I heard an indistinct mutter, but I couldn’t make out the conversation, as I was tired, so tired. I couldn’t keep my eyes open. We stopped, and I heard the door open, a blast of cold air hit my face.

I struggled awake as Clay helped me out of the car. “I need to give her another dose of holy water,” I heard Clay say.

As I stumbled out of the car, I noted the streets were dark. I had been asleep for a while. We were just a block over from Main Street in the residential area, the houses lit by porch lights or the random streetlight.

The house we were in front of was a plain white bungalow, built just after World War II, when the boys came back from the horrors of the European campaign. Just across the street was the Mt. Stone Lutheran church, its steeple lit up by a blinding white light, and the sign in front advertising Wednesday night bible study for all ages.

Immediately two things happened: the light went on next door, and Clay was by my side, helping me up.

“Are you okay? This is why I need to keep an eye on you. You're still out of it. People with magic seem to have worse effects than just the average man on the street. I’ll doctor you up when we get inside,” Clay hurried me up the walk. I limped, biting my lip in pain. I could tell my jeans were torn, and I could feel blood trickling down my leg.

Seconds before we made it to his front door, the neighbor's door flew open, and who should I see there but Mrs. Zane, her hair in rollers, wearing a ratty brown house robe, and clutching a broom as a weapon. “What in God's good name is going on out here?” she demanded, trying to peer at us in the dark.

“Mrs. Zane, good evening. No worries, Beth just tripped coming up my walk,” he said, fumbling around in his pocket for his keys.

Meanwhile, I leaned heavily against the porch rail, testing my weight on my knee and blinking back tears.

“This is unacceptable!” she said, her voice rising. “I never expected to find OUR
