Chapter 22

Anita was standing behind the counter at the Witch’s Brew when we entered. A couple of tourists were sitting in the picture window. It didn’t feel so long ago that I was a tourist here myself, thinking it was a quaint, cute town with some eccentric characters in it. I had had no idea how strange they were, and no idea how odd I was.

“So, what’s it like being a princess?” Jane asked as we relaxed and waited for Anita to bring us some tea.

“How would I know?” I asked. “Just because I’m the spawn of the Dark Fae king hardly makes me a princess.”

Jane gazed at me thoughtfully, her arms folding across her waist. “How do you feel about meeting him?”

“I don’t know. I haven’t thought about it,” I shrugged and stared out the picture window at the quaint town.

“Liar,” Jane said.

I swiveled my gaze on her. “I thought you didn’t read people’s minds.”

“I don’t,” she said with a smile. “Just a hunch that is now proven correct.”

“Well, the whole thing is weird at the best of times,” I mused. “I don’t know how to feel when my parents think we should have some sort of a relationship. I can only imagine how they’ve been living their lives, thinking one day they would reveal this amazing truth to me, and I would fall all over myself wanting to take up the mantle. At least that’s the way I imagine it.”

Chloe looked at me with astonishment. “Are you seriously worried about your father’s feelings? I get some people have to give up their children and I also understand in the Fae world you guys are given up. That’s part of the deal, right? It sucks, but it’s the system.”

“But it doesn’t mean you have to be whatever he wants.” Jane pointed out.

I was imbued with a sense of warmth from Chloe and Jane. It felt like they truly cared.

I knew they wanted me in the coven. The stones seemed to think I was supposed to be in their coven. It just wasn’t possible for me to wholeheartedly join them without fully exploring all my options. I owed it to myself to try and understand who I was.

“I know,” I responded. “It’s not about that. I understand I do not have to fulfill his wishes the way he wants me to fulfill them. It’s more about getting older becoming more discerning about how I want to spend your time and who I want to spend it with. I remember when I was in my twenties, I’d spend an hour or two with anybody who happened to be around. Now I only want quality people in my life. I don’t want to spend time and energy on things that aren’t important. I don’t know yet if my birth father is important to me or not yet.”

“Oh my God, that’s exactly how I feel,” Chloe said. “Not the bit about the birth father but the bit about having less tolerance to spend time with people just because you’re supposed to.
