Gloria had just cleared away their lunch plates when Theo leaned forward across the table. The Blue Goat was now empty as the final diners from the lunch rush slipped out the door.

“We have a spy problem.”

“What do you mean?”

“Someone in Black Lake Falls is communicating with the umbra and feeding them tactical information.”

She felt her brows wrinkle. “Like what?”

“Like advantageous times to attack the paraval.”

“How do you know?”

“Jerome and I analyzed all the attacks over the past year. There’s a pattern to the timing; all the attacks indicate they must have had advanced knowledge of where we were located and how we might respond.”

Elise thought for a moment. “The last attack was…”

“Shortly after getting a new warden — you. But the last successful attack was the day we buried Jack. The amulet had no warden at all then. The attack before that was when Ronath’s apprentice was on duty. The attack before that was when Jack was undergoing radiation therapy. Every single attack over the past year occurred at a time that gave them some sort of offensive advantage.”

“And somehow they knew when that opportunity presented itself. So, you think there’s a mole in Black Lake Falls.”

Theo nodded.

“It’s Santiago.”

“That’s a pretty quick judgment, Elise. Maybe, but he’s not really smart enough.”

“He had help then. Nina says he has followers.”

“Santiago couldn’t lead a duck to water, let alone lead a group of spies.”

“Maybe you’re underestimating him. And maybe Nina is helping him.”

Theo shook his head with vigor, holding up his hand. “No way. I trust Nina with my life.”

Elise wasn’t sure if Theo’s faith in Nina was misplaced. Nina and Santiago were cousins after all. “Who do you suspect then?”

“Not sure. Just help me by keeping your eyes open.” He dropped his napkin on the table and stood up. “I gotta get back.”

Elise followed him outside to his car. After he left, she crossed the street to her own car, waving to Edgar and Hilda who were standing together on the inn’s front patio.

That’s when she noticed a group of vampires huddled a short distance away from them. With a start, she realized Santiago was one of them. Slipping into the alcove of two shop entrances, she continued watching. As she took a step backward, she collided into something.

“Elise, are you here for my class today?” Gloria was standing behind her with an expectant look on her face.

“What? Oh,” she said, as she realized she was standing outside of New Dawn. Large glass windows lined the entire front of the yoga studio and faced the inn. It was the perfect spot to continue watching Santiago. “Yes, Gloria my schedule opened up and I thought I’d pop in today.”

“I knew you’d come soon.” Gloria’s eyes scanned over her. “It’s a bit of an unconventional choice for yoga wear, but I’m sure we can manage.”

With a sigh, Elise glanced down at her surgical scrubs. Though comfortable, they were hardly stretchy enough for the most demanding poses. “Yes, I’ll manage today and next time will bring something more suitable.
