Popular resort – Alphonse Karr (1808–90) was an extravagant personality, who used his talents as a journalist and pamphleteer to oppose Napoleon III from Nice, where he was in exile. He settled in St-Raphaël in 1864, in a villa named “Maison Close”. Writing to a Parisian friend, he said: “Leave Paris and plant your stick in my garden: the next morning, when you awake, you will see that it has grown roses.” Writers and artists responded to his invitation, including Alexandre Dumas, Maupassant, Berlioz and Gounod.

Félix Martin, local mayor and civil engineer, followed Karr’s lead and transformed the village into a smart resort, encouraging building, and linking St-Raphaël with Hyères by means of a small railway along the coast. Illustrious guests marked their stay in St-Raphaël with works of art: Gounod composed Roméo et Juliette in 1869, Scott Fitzgerald wrote Tender is the Night and Félix Ziem painted here.

THE TOWN CENTRE

The original town centre consists of an important and somewhat rare collection of seaside architecture dating from the beginning of the Third Republic (in the late 19C).
